When does the wastegate rattle appear?
Hi all, looking at picking up a 07 E92 w all packages- 83k miles. Being just out of turbo warranty makes me a bit nervous.
Is the WG rattle a kind of failure where, if its going to happen, it would have happened by 83k? And if it is fine it will be fine forever? If I don't notice any rattle during the test drive, should I be in good shape? In most cases is the rattle only on cold start? Any other advice or things to check for is appreciated. |

Rattle is typically when letting off the gas or applying light gas when rpms under 2-3k.. do you have access to service records? if so, look for turbo replacements or rattle fixes.. you can probably have a local dealer pull the service records as well if you have the vin.
with 83k on an 07, you may be fine if the car wasn't driven hard or previously tuned.. but you're rolling the dice if you won't have cash around if the turbos go, unless they've already been replaced and show it in the service records.. if you plan on modding, the jb4 iso5 has some adjustable settings to get rid of rattles that seems to work for most folks. it's done wonders for my 07.. on the bright side, if they eventually fail, you can upgrade to RB or Vargas Turbos

If you mod they will most likely rattle. I have 100km and they rattle. on start up for 1 min.
I have to set jb4 on 100% closed or open so i cant hear them rattle. Just buy RB's straight up. |

I am at 71k miles and mine rattle at startup for about a minute until the revs drop down to about 600. They also rattle once I take my foot off the gas.

6mt here; wastegates rattled slightly at 45k, dealer replaced them. Rattle came back with a vengeance by about 60k, had dealer replace them at 81k. Dealer also replaced actuator arms with upgraded arms. No rattle at all now, I'm at 99k miles with original turbos still running strong (knock on wood).

With the 07, I would look for:
-Replaced all 6 injectors under recall (May be covered till 100k, verify this) -inspect power steering pulley for evidence of it hitting subframe (if it hits, find a new car); also check if any part of the belt has shredded -when was the last intake valve walnut blast done -does it still have the original msd80 dme (could short circuit) (not much you can do here, just be aware) Test drive it on the highway, rev out 4th gear at wot a few times, and rev out 3rd into 4th (if manual); if auto maintain wot for several seconds on hway to ensure no lights or anything pops up. If all checks out ok, id go for it!

Do not listen to people that say to just buy upgraded stock frame turbid like rb's or Vargas. Those WILL rattle over time as well. The only way to ensure you never have rattle is to convert to a single turbo or the Vargas stage 3's with external wastegates(assuming this kit is ever finished and starts reaching customers). Right now, going single is the ONLY way.

Had that happen to me 6mo ago.. dealer will want to make a $10 problem cost thousands by replacing the DME, after they replace your plugs, coils, and injectors because they're to stubborn to accept that the DME failed.. don't fall for that, just find someone that know's how to solder mosfets, buy 6 new injector mosfets for $10, and replace the ones on the DME board.. just search the board, there's plenty of info on this as well as part numbers.

I'm at 81k on my '08 e90 and I have horrendous rattle. I'm taking it in to *hopefully* get them replaced under warranty, but my stealership has tried to pull some fast ones on me before... so we'll see.

Wastegate rattle is most prevalent during engine deceleration. It isn't a simple rattle like change in the pocket or that of the exhaust flapper, it is more like the noise a ratchet makes. It is also a consistent noise, irrelevant of engine temperature; those that report wastegate rattle at startup, but it clears after 60-90 seconds are misdiagnosing the noise.
Mine were rattling at 42k, and it was very apparent when driving next to a building (example: drive-thru). Free-revving in neutral or park should illustrate the ratcheting-metallic noise as well, with it originating from the passenger-side of the vehicle. A generic metallic-rattling noise at startup that appears to have no discernible source or emanates from the driver-side of the car more than any other area is typically the exhaust flapper. Review this video as it may help. Quote:

On a 2007, I'd recommend doing a cold start and some listening. There is "updated" DME programming logic (that pretty much every '07 now has) that opens the wastegates at idle and when revving in park/neutral after about a minute of engine run time. After that, you won't hear any wastegate rattles. For the first minute or so, you will. Start it up cold and give it a couple revs to 2-3k. Listen for a ratcheting type metallic sound. That's wastegate rattle.
