How to get louder on the N54, without any drone whatsoever

Hello all,

I am interested in making my car much louder, but without making the interior cabin sound change very much (drone). What would you guys recommend for this particular application?

Car is a 335is. Thanks!

So you want tons of noise, yet stock cabin NVH? Not happening.

This car can either be loud, boomy, and drony; or not. It’s very, very difficult to pull out a lot of drone without pulling out a lot of the “good” noise. It’s a twin turbo motor; it’s never going to sound particularly exotic. Now if you’re willing to put up with some drone, we can certainly get “loud”

Start searching the exhaust threads and listen to videos. Do you want ***less DPs?

I have BMS DPs and AE exhaust....sounds good.

From a Physics standpoint, you can attain plenty of noise without any drone. It is all about primary and secondary harmonics, and resonant frequencies, so it is definitely possible, I was just wondering if anyone has been able to do it.

I would not mind catless DP's. Does it drone on the highway?

Physically possible, of course. But as a practical matter on this platform, you cannot easily separate drone from overall volume. Resonators can help with rasp but the boomyness of the motor is just the way it’s gunna be when you have turbine wheels chopping up the exhaust gasses.

Downpipes actually didn’t do much in terms of overall volume. The tone gets raspier and just more “aggressive”, but they don’t add much noise. My setup is loud, but not crazy loud. The loudest N54 I’ve ever heard was a HPF Single exhaust; that is absolutely ridiculous unless you are making a lot of power to back up that much noise. I mean it’s just a wall of noise.

I see your point, but that is why I made this thread. I am looking for someone who has achieved a louder set up without increasing cabin volume. Before my brother traded in his 997tt for his 550i, i remember it was extremely loud from the outside and very peaceful inside. This is what I am looking for. Similarly my cousins 2013 camaro ss is the same. Extremely loud outside and quiet inside.

not mine but i have heard in in person, there are a few members on here that have done it and a few sounds clips on youtube. It sounds great, remember you can also add electronic cut outs to any exhaust and make it sound stock when you wish to.

Full Berk Street + catless DPs sounds like what you're looking for. That'll make a really nice sound without being overbearing in the cabin. Two resonators in the mids + a proper muffler should keep drone reasonable and not too intrusive.

Catless DPs + stock catback sounds nice, but it's not loud IMO.

performance exhaust = 0 drone. literally, 0.
I like drone, the pe is kinda boring due to the lack of drone but sounds exotic and not ricey :S

It would be pointless to get PE when I have a 335is already.

The mufflers are different on the 335is and the performance exhaust. Won't be as drastic a change since you have is mufflers already, but it's different still

Here's my experience, hopefully this helps you some..

I had full stock exhaust (stock downpipes and all).

I installed the Performance Exhaust, which sounded awesome, but I still wanted it just a little bit louder.

I then had my secondary cats removed and installed larger/nicer exhaust tips.

I wasn't expecting any kind of major difference, however removing the secondary cats & changing out the tips to the larger tips made a huge difference, the car is so much louder now. Yet there's still zero drone inside the cabin.

I had a pe exhaust and catted dp's. It sounded like a mini farrari outside. And inside no drine at any soeed. Just engine noise and the noise of the exhaust, but only when hitting the gas. It could go from suoer noisey to silent with an inch of pedal travel.

The pe exhaust is expensive for a reason.
Bmw may have built 30 exhaust with vigerous testing till they settled with what they have. They have money to butn for testing unlike other exhaust companies.

Just don't touch your downpipes or get a set with race cats in them. You should have no droning issues.

+1000. I have AR catted DPs and the BMW Performance exhaust. Drone on the hwy at 3000 rpm's is present but not by much. A bit more than the 'IS' exhaust w/ AR DPs which I had on my e90 for about 6 months. FYI...I had AR catted DPs, Berk resonated mid pipe, and Berk performance exhaust on my 135. Drone on the HWY was more than the BMW Performance set up but still live-able. Both set ups are fairly loud from outside the cabin.

FYI...I prefer the PE exhaust over the 'IS'. It is different.

Just do what I'm doing. Get race mufflers that you like, and weld them onto the stock cat back. The secondary cats, on our oem catback double as silencers, along with our stock resonators. Deleting them, like all aftermarket cat backs do (except the catted Autobahn Exotics) will yeild drone.

IS exhaust is not the same as PE. PE > IS

What he said, no cats, only have a slight slight drone for 200rpm from 1800-2000rpm. Have Autobahn Exotics. I like.
