Battery Dead

Hello everyone,

The battery on my 09 335i coupe with about 41K miles on it just died. I went to start it up this morning and it was a no go. When I looked into the "battery Indicator" color was black meaning insufucient charge.

I was having slow cranks about a week ago and it seems now it just gave out. Question to you all is, was i suppose to get an indicator on my dash stating low battery or is it normal for it to just die on you the way it did on me.

I believe 41k miles on the battery the car came with is fair considering my daily comutes are no more than 15 miles from each other.

Also, since its time for a new battery, should I just get an OEM from the dealer or an aftermarket battery ? I got my hands on a coding cable from one-stop electronics today so registering a new battery myself should'nt be a problem

Thanks in advance

I should probably add that the car started up quickly with a jump.

I also left it charging for a few hours. After that it started up just fine. But I know its a matter of time before it does it again.

I reckon it's getting colder there with winter setting in? This is always when batteries tend to die...

If you can get the OEM (same Ah capacity) for a decent price I would do that, otherwise look at an aftermarket battery with the same Ah and cold crank rating - changing capacity requires coding as well as registering, whereas simply replacing the battery with the same rating simply requires registering.

Views on this subject differ from person to person, but this is from my perspective - had to replace the 70 Ah lead acid battery on mine earlier this year, but it lasted 8 years which is not bad going!

Thanks for your input,

I am in Miami so cold weather down here isn't really a factor. I just read that driving short trips doesn't charge your battery. If thats the case, My daily commute has been super short for the last two years.

I am going with the OEM battery just to play it safe. I found it locally for $255. I have a coding cable so registering it is no biggie.

That sounds like a pretty good price. I spent $275 a while back to get a new battery and have it registered.

Yep, I reckon where you are it's pretty warm still in the colder months being closer to the equator. Short trips aren't good for batteries, but from what you say your daily commute of 15 miles should be enough actually - maybe a longer weekend drive would of course help too. I gather yours was also just a standard lead acid battery! The AGM batteries are super expensive!!
