AMP/Speaker upgrade from Logic 7 recommendations
Hey guys, fairly new to the E90 body line I just picked up a 2007 328xi... have owned my E46 for 7 years now with a pretty serious system. I am looking to upgrade the stock amp/speakers that come with the Logic 7 package, I also want to hook up a extra JL W7 10" woofer powered by a JL 1000/1 amp that I have laying around. I am also installing a Pioneer AVIC-X950BH double DIN that I just picked up with the Metra bezel/heated seat button relocation kit and have everything else to install the double DIN, I am having this all professionally installed but any suggestions/tips you guys have will help (I have spoke to another forum member thats local to me and has his double din/sub install by the same place I am going but he had a few issues that they have now taken care of)
Are the stock chimes powered by the stock head unit with the logic 7 system? Does JL make replacement speakers for our cars? What amp do you guys recommend? I was looking at the JL 600/6 or JL 800/8 What speakers do you guys recommend? Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks, Tom. Last edited by 323tom; 12-15-2013 at 07:11 PM.. |

There is a a list of speakers that do fit in the first thread . A Technic Harness is a must unless you get a MusicarNW Kit as it comes with the kit or the necessary harness does. Morels and Jehnerts are the favored speakers for the most part. I would be careful as most professional installers can't do a BMW very well. You should be aware that changing the head unit comes with some side effects. 1)BMW will not be able to update your software or do diag repairs that require changes in software values without the original head unit installed. For this reason some mount the old head unit in the trunk. 2)Any options that work through the radio such as BMW SOS , PDC, bluetooth will cease to work without the original head unit installed and may throw error messages. Read the following thread for parallel mounting. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=dynavin http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ight=head+unit There is also something called a connects2 harness now which is basicly a Y that allows two head units to be hooked up . I don't know what the problems are with that one if any . Last edited by ctuna; 12-15-2013 at 11:48 PM.. |

Thanks for your reply, I will look into those speakers you suggested and I may have to give MusicarNW a call, I have read about the Technic harness but from my understanding I will not need this with a aftermarket amp/head unit? I have also read about the side affects of not having the stock head unit and having it mounted in the trunk could be a possibility, I don't have PDC and SOS that I know of at least haha, the installer I have chosen has already done 2 of these cars now and I have spoken with one of them (forum member) and it should not be a problem, Ill check the connect2 out as well

Am I missing something? If he does relocate HU to trunk, then I could possibly see the need for one, though even that might need clarification (and may be covered in one of the links you provided).

In the dash the connects2 harness is the best option. Tap into the can wires on the connects2 harness and extend them to the metra harness in the trunk for the stock headunit. Use the most cables from the stock amp and power and ground from techincs harness to relocate the headunit. For chimes there are a couple of ways to do it. 1. Use the connects2 harness for pdc with a line output converter. You'll have to use the speaker level outputs from the new headunit into an active or passive line output converter. Your chimes would play on the existing speakers. 2. Use the connects2 harness for pdc with a seperate speaker in the dash for the chimes. 3. Recode the stock headunit to base and use the stock headunit for the chimes. You'll have add seperate speaker(s) for this. |

+1. I thought the logic 7 speakers sounded very good with just an xd600/6. Also there are plenty of good processors, but the MS8 isn't one of them.

Haha, down the line looking for the Rockford Fosgate 3Sixty.3. I don't care for DSP, just a more versatile crossover. That way I can fine tune those under seats for solid mid bass and I'd like to add a JL 10w7 in the trunk

You need a basic harness at least.
You need a basic harness at least.
You need to route the pre amp out of the HU to the new amps in the trunk as the OEM Head Unit amp has no wires for this. If you use the existing speaker wiring you need to tap into the amp connector in the trunk or cut or tap at the connector that routes the wiring to the speakers. Rule number one in the audio upgrade thread is don't cut off the connectors. I believe Technic has a L7 harness for this. |

If it wasn't clear, when I said to cut off the connector I meant from Technic's harness not the stock wiring. |
