Ryan Castro's Avus Blue LS1 M3 Project (e36) *With Vids*

Hey guys,

I hope you guys don't mind if I post my Non-E90 project in case some of you may find it interesting.

Posted as of 8/2011

1995 Avus Blue BMW M3 with a great running LS1 and T56 tranny from a 02 Camaro SS. I have raced BMWs all my life and will be road racing this one too!

Haven't done much to the motor yet but this is what has been done so far:

-Long tube headers becuase of the lack of space on the sides of the motor
-dual 3in pipe from the headers, to two 3in high flow cats to a single 4in outlet
-low temp thermostat
-4in intake
-MSD APS starter
-40% lock up 3.46 rear differential

Right now its at about 308whp / 313 tq

I hope to do some cam/head work soon.

here are some pics:

As a matter of fact:
On Oct, I took the LS1 on its maiden Track Day at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway and she did me proud. I left the street tires on becuase I wanted to know how she would perform w/o the slicks on.

Track temps were at 100-105F all day but she ran well within normal temp. Vids to come soon as soon as I can get them off my wife's camera, so here are some pics for now:

Hip and groin surgery time!

Subframe bushings too a dump so I got the subframe out and this is whats happening now:
- diff is off to get rebuilt to a 3.91 w/40% lockup
- subframe to get AKG poly bushings with subframe a couple of reinforcements
- New SS brake lines
- New rear camber arms

So today. I just cleaned up the chassis reinforcement plates and re painted them so its nice and clean for the subframe to come back

Best time of the day for me was 1:30:34 Not bad as I know there are some spots I can push harder

Got too aggressive chasing down an E92 M3 also running similar times. Great to know my car can hang with the big new and more expensive v8s

AND here we are currently as of 11/2013

So whats up for 2014???

Some update pics:
Some Dry sleeved block action.

and this past weekend 12/2013

Got some progress done this weekend. LS1 is out. My god its so great to have access to a lift, power tools, and extra hands!

While waiting on the new motor, next up
1. To clean up the old installation wiring
2. Figure out what I want to do with the brakes, change to smaller booster or go manual brakes..., if I wanted to change it up.
- Want to retain ABS so we will move the unit
3. remake power steering line
4. Add more heat shielding
5. Convert headers to v-band and ceramic coat
6. Wait for new motor
-I've decided that once the motor is finished, I will do an engine dyno break in.

Motor is just about done but since AFR will not be open to receive it over the holidays, ERL will ship the motor first week of Jan. I can't wait!

This project is pretty awesome. I'll bet an E36 with that motor is a ton of fun.

...so what engine is going in? I'm new to the domestic scene so I can't tell from the teaser pictures you posted

After 5x brand-new BMWs I am now a proud owner of a Chevy Small Block, so of course I countered my share of snark and also am learning on the fly about their history and attributes. I have grown to appreciate them as perfectly capable powerplants and wholly competitive in a wide range of fields.

You can say that I have now seen the light

Definitely, it is obvious why this is the engine of choice for many swaps. Big HP and Torque in a small package.

What is going in? An built forged 7.1 (434ci) LS Motor. So essentially the same motor but with a much larger bore and stroke. Old motor was 5.7L (346ci)

AND... An update
machine work looks good here....all four corners were between .0025 and .004 out of the hole. That's very good for this type of thing....basically held the tolerance +/- .001

Headers are back from heat coat so I hope to get photos of those soon
