CLS 63 not as fast as I thought

This morning after getting my morning coffee I was admiring a CLS 63 in the parking lot and he pulled out behind me. I noticed him still behind me as I took the turn to get on the ramp to the the interstate. As I was looking in my rear view mirror I see the rear of the CLS squat so I put it to the floor as well. We ran up to about 130 not letting off until we merged onto the highway. I was very surprised as he started off about 1 1/2 car lengths and only pulled about 1/4-1/2 of a car length. I think he was surprised as well by the way he was looking over at my car when we were beside each other in traffic later on. I gave him a nod and he just turned his head. The CLS was definitely faster as well it should be but not as much faster as I thought. Just thought I would share this story.

Before any of you flamers start I rarely do this and typically back down from pointless challenges but it was early with zero traffic so I couldn't resist.

Yes I realize the CLS 63 is a 500 hp car and does 0-60 in the low 4's.

I am in no way saying that a 335 is faster than a CLS 63

Yes he pulled closer and was faster

I am simply saying that I was surprised he did not pull more I thought he would be glued to my bumper

I am pretty certain he was trying since he nailed it first and also kept in it up to about 130.

:O

Unless you have a PROcede chip I am VERY surprised. Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG's have 500+ HP and loads of Torque. I'm not taking anything away from your BMW, but it has nearly 50% more power.

*LOL* 500 HP. That's what, 66% more HP than a 335? It's pretty close, we've got composite fenders which should make up for some of the difference.

did you ever think that he wasn't trying?

And him turning his head after you gave him a nod, probably because he thought a dude was coming on to him and he doesn't swing that way.

I understand, it is just hard to believe that a 63 cannot pull on a 335.

BMW 335i:

300hp, 300lb-ft, 3500lbs

CLS 63 AMG:

514hp, 465lb-ft, 4200lbs

Lastly, Mercedes makes terrible gearboxes; espeically because the 63 AMG has too much torque for their 7-speed, so it's a 5.

While I wish to believe that our 335i can keep up with any AMG 6.3 engine, we all know w/o increase boost ++ we have no shot. The car does 1/4 mile in mid 12's and only gets faster past 150mph(as evidenced by the tests between the FI 55 vs 63). There is no replacement for displacement.......

P.S.: Have you heard the sounds coming out of the of that 6.3? Maybe he was trying to give you a chance to.......Aural bliss....

A v12 500 hp ferrari 550 maranello has a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds

HP is not always relative

Once again please read thoroughly

I did not say that I kept up with him ....He pulled me by roughly 1/2 car length

an AMG 63 is on par with an E60 M5 in P500. Stock your 335i will get demolished. My 335i with Procede even has nothing on a E60 M5. Trust me, I tired, and it wasn't pretty. Even tho all the 335i procede fanbois on this forum will argue and try to tell you other wise. I could care less whats faster, I wish a procede 335i could keep up either with a M5 or an AMG 63.

As I said he did pull by roughly 1/4 to 1/2 car length. Knowing the specs of the CLS63 I just thought it would be more.

How many car lengths did the M5 beat you by?

Here's what happened, that partial CL he pulled on you was as close as he wanted to get to your bumper, even people who drive hard don't tailgate going 130. If you were side by side it would have been a walk.

For future reference, the CLS63 has a 7-speed where as the CLS55 had a 5-speed.

Good to see some rational behavior by some 335 owners.

Just so you know all amg today (except the 65's, sl55) have the 722.9 ( 7 speed auto).

And the amount of gears doesnt mean the gear box is crap. Lastly they make some of the nicest auto trans.

The CLS wasnt trying.

I almost bought an E55, then thought about a CLS550....I did a ton of research on both and spent times in various AMG forums. My budget when I bought my 335i was $70K, in case you were wondering that means yes for up-to-$70K the e90 335i is the bang out there with 4 doors, imho, and I saved myself $25K which I will put towards the GT-R

Basically, the CLS55 is faster than the CLS63. And with a simple swap of Supercharger pulleys, they are faster yet. Time slips for E55's (most members had the 'E' bodied version of that chassis) stock were common in the low-mid 12's on the forums, where as higher 12's for the 63 versions of the same. MB even admitted at the Road Atlanta AMG days the year the 63 came out that it was not as fast in a straight line, and was backed up by the drag strip-runs done by participants.

So, we are talking a higher 12's car (AMG63) versus a mid-to-low 13's car (335i)...in many races there would not be a huge gap.

The 55 is faster 0-60 because it has more TQ, the 63 has more HP which means it is faster at higher speeds (C&D Article 123).

At the 1/4 mile, based on published times, the 63 should have at least 5 car lengths from the 335(not 1/4), unfortunately 100+ speeds is where the 63 engine shines and the gap will only widen. The OP said he went to 130, based on published times, the CLS63 will do 0-150 in 23 seconds, the 335i will do 0-140 in 26 seconds(could not find a similar test), for arguments sake even if the 335i did 150 in 26 seconds that would put the 63 at more than 40 car lengths away, yes 40.

Just look at the videos of the Z4M vs 335i, the 335i was demolished, both of those would share the same fate to the 63, sorry, our "3's" are in a different league.

The OP said that the car did pull on him. Maybe the CLS driver wasn't going full-tilt, but the fact remains that the OP never said his car is as fast or nearly as fast. I don't get why everyone seems so irked by his post.
