Modified 335i anyone changed spark plugs?
Has anyone with high rpm misfires changed or re-gapped plugs on an N54 yet? I partially pulled the plastic cover, but it was really busy under there so I decided to post first.
Is there a how to or a FAQ on this that I missed in my search? Is a special tool required? What plugs are you using? |

Dont know what plugs are still oem(used to be the 3/4 prong bosch) but if its a single prong, try sidegapping it.

One of my spark plugs was causing misfires and was changed out by my dealer.

I wonder if your engine may actually have some damage from Procede? Is that possible? Did you check all your plug wires and ECU connections?

The injectors don't have to come out to do plugs but......there is a special tool with the right clearance to get the plugs out. What makes you think the plugs are causing the misfires? Normally, unless the car was pinging bad enough to damage an electrode the spark plugs are fine.
I highly doubt your misfires are caused by the spark plugs. I have seen a very very few bosch coils with the boots cracked causing misfires on these cars. I've also seen a couple of faulty injectors causing misfires. The injectors are something that will HAVE to be replaced at a dealer as the calibration number of the new injector has to be input to the DME with our diagnostic software. That and the slew of special tools required to replace the injectors and install the teflon seals that must be replaced anytime a injector is removed will prevent you from doing it yourself.

Cyl. 4, but the Tech determined it was a bad spark plug and replaced it.

I haven't read AFRs on cylinders individually (of course), but the gas analyzer/WBO2 on the dyno has me safely rich throughout the rev range. I just have to reduce my boost a bit more than I'd like to up high, and I believe its due to ignition. If there was a fueling problem, there would be other signs and probably detonation. I'm getting no detonation at all, just a high RPM misfire on #1 when the wick is turned up. Everywhere else its smooth as butter. I think that if I close the gap a bit on that plug, the problem will go away completely, but I need to find a way to remove the plug to check it out. |
