LCI - USB ipod interface not working; please help

Hoping some members can advise:
I have an E91 LCI model . Made in 2008 with Prof Media (bluetooth and sat nav).
It has a USB port in the glove box and aux 3.5mm in the centre space.
I know I can listen to my music on my iphone via the aux lead, however, when I plug in the USB, all it does is charge the phone. There is no option on the idrive to select USB media connection. ?? and view and select all my music on the screen. When I go to the option for import/export music, it then requests that I connect device to USB port, which I do, but nothing appears on the display.
I'm baffled. :-( I thought all the LCI models had ISB iphone/Android music compatibailtiy through the idrive.

Does my idrive need a software update or something similar?
Could it be that my BMW was amongst the first batch of facelifted models? and therefore the ipod interface wasnt avalable at that point?
I notice other LCI models have the usb and aux port in the centre storage armrest space.
Surely BMW wouldn't just have a USB port that charges the phone only?

Sorry for all the questions.
I have the Prof Media option....Appreciate any feedback to all members

Unfortunately, that is incorrect. You have bought a premium car and they know how to charge for every single option.
USB socket in the glove box is to upload the music to the CIC hard driver (via flash drive) or to upgrade the maps).

That is whats known as 6FL or ipod connectivity. On those cars, you use the apple Y cable to connect your ipod.

Or the cars which have combox require standard apple cable.

Thanks Makkan, appreciate your quick reply. All makes sense.

I think I'll just use my flash drive (USB memory stick) and connect, then import all my tracks.
Just curious, why the I-drive does not recognize my phone as a device/flash drive?
Also will a laptop connected by USB work for importing?

I wouldn't connect a laptop to it as there is a risk of voltage being transferred and damaging your iDrive system.

I bought the 8gb BMW USB stick and it's been very good. Also to make your memory in the car go further transfer the music in mp3 format.
