after breakin period -- oil change?

do I need oil change after braking peroid?1200 miles? but the sales man says 15000 miles to do the first oil change. is that true?

if you have peroid in your oil, after braking, you shoudl change.

nope!!! it isnt an M which i believe they put a different viscosity oil in for running in.. some one please correct me?!

they dont do that with the 335 and assume its owners will hammer it from new so put normal oil in!!

Get an oil change, it is worth the few bucks for a little piece of mind - there are lot's of microscopic pieces of metal and other things in there from building the engine and the first running in. Put in fresh at 1500 - I wouldn't want what I have seen come out at 15k in my engine for a long time.

Did you buy the car or lease it or plan on buying it after the lease is up?

Do yourself a favor and change the oil, maybe every 5k or so. I'm doing my first one this weekend (had to goto 7.5k *sigh* due to my busy schedule). My buddy did it at 3k and the oil was extremely black already.

Only M cars get break-in oil change. Some time ago it was reasoned that the M engines are hand built, and therefore require the break-in change.

We use synthetic oils, which last longer than conventional oil.

I’m about to hit 1500 miles by next weekend. I already went out and purchased Rhino ramps (so much for the Oil Boy Oil extractor I have), Mobil1 0W-40 and heading to BMW to pick up a filter. Cost estimate for all this is about $90.00. The dealer will charge you anywhere between $100 and $180 for this same service.

It may be overkill, but I’m not going to be saying to myself “why didn’t I change the oil back at 1500 miles”… For a mere $90.00, it’s peace of mind if not more especially if you plan to get on this car like most of us do!

Please explain to us how you get metal shavings from a cast aluminum block...

I would think that with the install of the pistons/rings for the first time, the valves and machining of the seats, cam, crank. Obviously it won't be much, but the tolerances are such that "shavings = increased friction = increased wear = decreased life."

do you really think BMW want there cars failing in later life because they extended the service intervals, no way mate, the car/engine and this new long life oil with long service intervals are fine for the longevity of your engine!

BMW cant risk having 5-8 year old cars failing.. it would ruin there image!

The block is rough cast. Every single part that is fitted to the block is a machined connection. Simple as that.

I like to clarify the break in period.
A motor needs to be broken in when the motor comes from the factory with "break in" oil. This is a low quality oil that speeds up the break in process (wear), because it has very little additives (piston rings and cylinder walls especially). That is also the reason for keeping the rpm low. This was still the case for the M3 E46. The N54 comes allready with synthetic from the factory, so isn't it obvious that there is no break in period (maybe they do it at the factory, don't know just guessing)? This is only possible due to the minimal tolerances and todays superb manufacturing processes.

FYI, the N54 block is made of aluminum alloy with cast cylinder liners.

Oil sampling - break-in oil

I, too, was concerned about the break-in oil, so I send a sample for analysis to Titan Labs, 1380 Zuni St. Denver 80204. Their business is 18 wheeler fleet oil management. Oil quality management is what allows diesel trucks to go 500 K miles before overhaul. But, I digress...

The test results tell all:copper and aluminum tested high- recommendation: change oil and filter immediately. Titan wants me to retest the next sample to see if I have a REAL problem, but if not, I would have a baseline of metals concentration.

Summary: a NEW engine will give off microscopic pieces of moving parts as they 'seat-in'. Oil is designed to carry it to the filter. Periodic oil sampling will tell you your engine's condition and, when you have a baseline sample, you can predict repairs. There are oil sampling labs everywhere. Change out your 'break-in' oil and then send a sample of the NEXT change so you have your post break-in baseline. You'll be glad you did. Cost ~ $25.00

The casting process produces irregularities, the machining takes away most of this, but the ring seating wears metal off the block.

Most al cast blocks are sand cast. Don't know about BMW.

Don't do the early oil change. The few abrasives in the oil are helping to breakin the engine and seat the bearings and rings. Synthetic oil does not wear out, it only gets dirty. After the first oil change called for by the car, you can change the oil filter if you want to waste the money.

Hasn't this subject already been discussed to DEATH like 1000000000+ times...... and here you guys are talking about it ONCE again!

Bottom line is: -If it makes you sleep better at night to change your oil after 1200 miles do it. It is not required by BMW and they will charge you for this service.....

If you think that any of your oil related questions have not been answered I'd recommend the button...... Because, it has been talked about already!

For all you guys that are so put off by folks asking questions that have been dicussed already, step back and count to 10. Now, if the search function were better suited to those typical searches that we do, then more people would use it first. I know that everytime I want to know something, I DO in fact search 1st. But the problem is that it is very difficult to narrow the search or get usable results. People will usually follow electrons and take the path of least resistance - ie they are going to bug the piss out of the persistently pompous posters.
I don't mean to offend anyone, just posting some provacative words to spark thought.
