Question for all you Floridians

I live in Boston now and I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT HATE IT HATE.

My dream would be to move down to Florida and relocate for good. However, every time I search for jobs down there. There's barely any. I only find restaurant jobs or sales (not for me)

What does everybody there do for a living?

Cool

I work for an Insurance company as an IT Engineer/Project Manager.

It's true Florida is a tourist state with tourist type jobs like was mentioned. Keep in mind a lot of companies allow full time teleworker and part time commuting. So you could live in Florida and either work from home or travel to commute once in a while.

I have a medical/laboratory background and work at a cancer laboratory at the moment. It would be nice to find a job like that down there but everywhere I look (craigslist, indeed, etc etc) all I find is hotels and restaurants

Anybody have any inside tips about where I should be looking instead?

ALSO, does me living so far hinder me from getting called for interviews? I don't know if employers see that as a turn off. :/

Has anyone here relocated from somewhere far to Florida (without knowing anyone in the state)? I kinda sorta feel like it would be easier if i had family down there or at least some friends, so i can crash in their couch for when it comes to interview time!

There are a lot of Medical professionals down here, this being a retirement state and all. I know a bunch of my friends who were pre-med in college are working in labs at the moment if they are waiting on med school or finished school and waiting on residency.

Might be difficult to secure a job from out of state but better if u take a leap of faith and come down here for 3-6-12 months.

I live in VA currently and have been looking into this for years now its just time i pull the trigger. Used to live in Cape coral when i was super young and loved it and am down there for bike week on and off since 2002. I love the weather and the general attitude people have compared to up north. One problem im having is not sure if i can swing it alone and whats the best area for younger people. Any info from you guys that live down there currently would be great. thanks

Shoot! I knew I wasn't the only one. I'm afraid to just take the "leap of faith" and run through my savings paying for an apartment/bills for 3-6-12 months while down there looking for a job. Then I have to ultimately come back here to frigid Boston if things don't work out. That's what I don't want! I don't ever want to come back here lol I can't stand these winters. I can't stand the pot holes on these beat up streets. I can't stand the conservative-ness of the state. I can't stand "excise taxes" (a tax to drive ur car on the street). Boston is lame. Party life ends at 1:30 am everywhere. Restaurants close at 10pm usually. I can't stand having 2 plates on a car (i know, i know) this is all small stuff. But its all the stuff that i envy Florida for! specially the weather and the people!!

just prepare expectations. lower cost of living but lower salaries and wages. right to work state, not many large corporation headquarters or front office.
I like Tampa and grew up in FL but there are plenty of great places to live outside of FL with stable / growing job markets. Charlotte and Austin immediately come to mind.

Look at Southwest Florida

Hertz Corporate Offices are moving down to Estero FL. Bunch of jobs opening up.
Chico's FAS Corporate offices are located in Fort Myers.

I work in real estate here in Miami. Let me know when you are ready to move and I'll find you a place. I've lived in Gainesville, Orlando and Miami so I know a lot of parts of florida pretty well.

I live in Tampa and work in Auditing at the moment. But I am going back to the finance world. There is a lot of opportunity down here, and a lot of medical centers for you.

All the oldies have to go somewhere!

I lived in Mass/NH for 28 years and moved to Destin FL in 2002. I love it more than anything....Still a die hard pats/sox fan

Jobs are popping up but more closer to major cities, IE..Tampa, Tallahassee, etc... No veh inspection too, very mod friendly...

Selling Insurance is huge all over FL.
