320si (N45b20s) rebuild and tuning - What now?
Just bought a 320si with the infamous liner cracks.
Endoscoped the engine first, so knew how bad the engine was. First day of ownership I yanked the engine and shipped it for a steel liner job. So now the first issues appears: -BMW has an engine rebuild sealing/gasket kit. But what’s the Part number? Can’t find it in the ETK. -Are there any tuning parts out there I might consider putting in now that the engine is disassembled? -Other issues I might tell my rebuilder to perform? -The air intake looks ineffective and restrictive. Any tuning intake out there? |

320is is a nice car, sad to hear it has such issues.
if this is the repair you will be doing: http://www.hthoward.co.uk/engine-mac...block-repairs/ -Maybe it is a good opportunity to have certain cylinder components coated with ceramic heat reducing coatings. Its best to see what an expert would say For intake, i would take apart the current air box, and see if there is any extra filter after the air filter and remove it/cut it out. Than replace old air filter with a performance air filter from Pipercross, BMC, K&N, aFe. If that is not enough maybe cut a hole in the side of the intake box lid near the headlight. We call this here the euro mod. Otherwise see if Simota makes an intake for you. The race engine here: http://www.garaget.org/?car=146631&image=2277709 Suggests that you need Headers.

Yes, same as the HTHoward, but with minor differences.
Hmm, the ceramic heat reducing coating maybe a good idea. I'll bring it forward to the rebuilder and see what they think. The problem with the racecar intake is that the race engine has different wire loom. The streetcar use a wire loom box attached underneath the air intake. Also some air/vacuum hose connections needed for the streetcar, so the race intake is not a direct fit. But a lookalike converted to fit the street engine would be tha bomb. There are some strange looking cylinder rods inside the manifold that looks restrictive. But it also has a DISA valve (looks like). So by changing to a "tuning intake" the car might lose the everyday drivability and some power/torque in the low end? Did not find any intakes at Simota, but I'll drop them a mail. But just a CF "copy" of the original intake for the look and sound is OK for me. It's a NA engine anyway, so can't expect wonders in the BHP range. Performance filter will be mounted. But won’t cut any holes in the box for more direct air. I rather go for the BMW performance intake and make it fit in to the filter box. I also see that there are Schrick cams out there. Look like they dont make the big impact over original? But there must be big restrictions some place. It use more gas than a 330. Telling me that the efficiency level dont match the bhp level. Valvetronic or not... The cat converters are build in to the headers, so changing that makes the money fly I guess? But new exaust and a MAP might be the right end to start with. The rebuilder just found play in the exhaust valve guides.
And BMW don't sell new/replacements ![]() ![]() BMW solution? Yepp, you guessed it: Bye a new head ![]() Valve guides must be produced somewhere, so I guess I just have to look for a machine shop that can make valvegudes from measure? |

Yes, it was finished in original spec. And I did not do any modifications - yet...
Still want to do some upgrades, but also to sell it. So still keeping it stock. The engine builder found almost similar valve guides that they just had to machine a small amount to make them fit. All he said was that they found it from a US brand. But do not know from whom. Engine rebuilder sayd also that how the top was designed and channels looked they think that the head it self would be same as the WTCC version and would flow for 275bhp with ease. And that what it would need to release a lot of hp was the cams, new unrestricted intake, and matching exhaust. To get the last out it would also need new EMS and maybe injectors. In my case it turned out that the catalytic converters needed replacement also. After engine was fixed it started reporting Faulty Three-way Catalyst Converter. I suspect that driving with cracked engine for too long (mine was driven about 8000km during a year when it was in and out of BMW dealer to find the fault) could damage the catalytic converters. |
