Help! Oil spraying all over engine...
So, to make this as simple as possible, I hadn't driven my car in a day or so. I start up my car and let it warm up for about 15 minutes. I then proceed to drive to the store a few miles away. Never entered boost or even hit 3k rpms. Car ran fine the entire time and no check engine lights. Right when I pull into the parking lot, I start smelling burning oil so I immediately park and shut off the car...pop the hood and find this:
Can anyone tell by this pic what might be causing this?! The car drove completely fine the entire time and the car never had a check engine light. It looks to be coming out of the oil filter housing...I did get an oil change at my local dealership about a month ago but haven't noticed anything until this and it seems like a ton of oil. Also to add, I recently installed a JB4 but hadn't done any pulls for a couple days and hadn't experienced any problems up until tonight and was driving very conservatively. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated! Edit: Sorry about the clips broken under the cowl...I am getting a new one but accidentally broke those clips while installing the JB4 so don't hate

Welp, thanks to someone else pointing this out to me...you can see the dealership left the tool on the oil filter housing cap and probably didn't even tighten it down...They are definitely getting a call from me in the morning...

Naw I'll just take the car back, let them clean up everything and give me a free oil change. Those tools are 20 bucks....oil change was 80. Not worth the hassle when this has already been very inconvenient.

Tool is not the problem. When they changed the oil filter they probably didnt seat the o-ring in the correct groove so its leaking by the cap. may want to check that before u drive it to the dealers, else if you run low on oil youll be in a world of hurt.

They owe you a full under the hood detail and replacement air filters. no questions asked.
That's just poor workmanship.

if that was a bmw dealership, they owe you BIG time----your going to smell oil in your car for thousands of miles now. Make sure your oil level is in operating range before more damage happens!!!

That's ugly!
I'd certainly be after them to detail the engine bay and replace the air filters at their cost. Bet you have some nasty smells coming through the vents! Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks wet under the cabin filter too - I'd check to see if that got oil on it or you'll be smelling oil in the cabin indefinitely. |

That's crazy sloppy work!! I would make them clean that engine bay for you and replace the parts as mentioned above!
Just a side note, why let the engine idle warm, especially for so long?! Worst engine wear in on a cold engine and letting it just idle... Best is to start it up, give it a few seconds for all the fluids to move around, then drive off gently. It's better for the engine and fuel economy! |

Just a quick update: Dealer was great with agreeing to fix everything on their dime. Only lost about a quart of oil which isn't bad out of 7. I was glad I noticed it so quickly and shut off the car right away. They paid for the tow, new filters, cabin filters were checked and perfect as well. They also cleaned the entire bay and undercarriage. They actually took off all undercarriage covers and cleaned underneath and next oil change is free. Last thing, they cleaned my car inside and out Looks great since I don't clean it near as often in the winter months

That's great news. Did the dealer actually diagnose what the issue was? Was it just a loose cap (I think the Tech never changed the filter he just loosed the cap and forgot about it), or was it a mis-located or missing cap o-ring?
Thanks for the update. |

Yeah, the tech admitted to putting the new filter on, hand tightening it, putting the tool on and then stepping away and forgot the rest. Frustrating but glad it was nothing major. I popped the hood thinking the worst when it happened and it ended up being okay. Thanks everyone! Pretty happy with the outcome as well.

I hope you're not letting it just idle for 15 mins. Best way to get the car up to temperature is to drive it normally but don't go too hard on the gas.
