Went on Holiday now car won't start - Help

Hey All,

I have just returned from holiday. I was out for 40 days and my E93 was left outside. Tried to get the car to start this morning, although everything works (radio, lights, boot, etc), I get a "click" sound when I press the start button to try to start it. CIC says something like "Battery Discharge" (can't remember the exact words).

Do you guys think I need a new battery? My neighbour saw me trying to start the car and let me use his 5Amp Halfords charger. I left it plugged for two hours but no difference, the car won't start.

Any help is really appreciated! Thanks!

Not at all.Use some half decent jump leads and make sure the Audi is running. Get the BM fired up and go for a run, then charge it overnight with your mate charger. Simples

Cant see what model you have as viewing on iphone but if you have a duesel you will need powerpack more powerfull than halfords one.

When mine went flat the mechanic said those small packs are ok for smaller battery but on these they need decent piwer to charge them up

Check the voltmeter across the battery to see if its actually getting charged?
Charging fault ? Faulty alternator? Possibly not?

May be your battery has died?

If you want OEM battery for your car, give me a shout.

Hi Makkan,

On the CIC screen at the top, there was a little red triangle and the message "Charging Fault".

For some reason, after 10 minutes or so running on its own, car turned off by itself. Went downstairs and tried to get it started again by pressing the start/stop button and no go. Now ABS light coming up on the screen and some other one I can't figure out what it means...lol damm any clues of what could be? how could the battery have died like this?

Take a multi-meter and check what voltage are you getting across the battery terminals?

Jump start the car again. Its winter time and if your battery is 4-5 years old, one cell die, your battery dies.

GL.

Sounds like you need a new battery, mine went about 6 months ago and started doing similiar things yours is doing, swapped the battery and its been fine ever since, i dont know who says you need to code them as mine works better now than it did before , it was re-setting clocks, loosing saved stations and the heater would only blow half way when turnt right up.
Also only cost me £85 when bmw wanted silly money i think close to £300

Have a look on ECP if you're going to replace the battery.

They had a pretty decent sale on them the other day when I got one for another vehicle.

Exide or Bosch are good.

My money's on the alternator, even if the battery was knackered the car would not cut off while it's on. Only if the alternator fails this can happen. I would say the bearings on the alternator have become seized while you were away and due to the cold weather. Defo check the voltage before battery replacement.

Agree with this. Had this on a Golf Mk4 which turned out it was a alternator fuse that had blown from jumping the car.

If you haven't got 14v going to the battery with the car running then its an alternator fault and that is why the car shut down as the battery was then too flat to keep it going.

^^above offer for battery

If you have left your car for X days then its more than likely the battery has drained. It is winter and very cold which batterys hate!

a CTEX will recharge and re-condition the battery as well as TEST that its able to hold charge or its faulty, shit if I leave my car for more than 10 days I have to recharge the battery.

Bump start will do exatly that, start the car, its not a miracle cure the last 40 days

Charge the battery using a battery conditioner (CTEK is £50-60) and it could be the best cash you every spent, seriously.

Hmm, Alternator eh? If thats what its happening, whats the best course of action? Check the battery voltage w a multimeter after fully charging it with a battery charger? How would I know for sure the alternator is the issue?

I suppose I should fully charge it first to make sure it is fine? Hopefully not the alternator!

if it was fine before you left on your jollys, then why would it break standing still?

only thing thats happen since that time is the battery has had time to discharge.

Yea! well I do hope its only a battery discharge issue. If it happens to be a faulty battery + alternator, that would be an expensive holiday

I will check if halfords sells the CTEK, Im not sure about my neighbours halfords 10 year old charger
