Dealer is now doing carbon cleaning.

So I was speaking to my SA today and he told me they have a new tool to clean out the carbon buildup on our cars he said this is a new initiative BMW is trying out instead of replacing the intake manifold on our cars.

I asked him to get me a quote for this service just out of curiosity.

Pretty interesting.

My intake is being cleaned as well. That has not decreased the wait I've had getting the car back, which is now 105+ days. Still waiting for Germany to acquire newly manufactured intakes. Then, shipping to US and finally put it all back together.

I really hate just about everything about F30 328s. After 9000+ miles, I feel qualified to make the assessment.

Based on the original post, it seems that this also may only be for the intake manifold. While a good start, carbon build-up is also an issue for the cylinderhead as well.

It will be interesting to see if the head is part of the service as well (a la n54 carbon cleaning), or if it is intake manifold only.

...and if it was in the range of $700-$800 and was intake and cylinder head, I would do it as a preventative maintenance every 50k miles anyway.

Yes, I too am curious to hear exactly what is cleaned. If intake manifold and valves, my guess is 800-1200 (because it should be 600-800). If anything deeper, probably quite a bit more.

I beleive if still under warranty we should get it free thats why Im pushing to hv this SIB brought out so i can approach my deaaler with it, anyone know the SID number on it!!

Agreed, but you know it would only be free under warranty if it was found to the cause of another issue (SES light, etc). If affordable (relatively speaking), I would gladly pay to have it done as preventative maintenance.

I'm not sure if that is something I should be happy or sad about....

Figure the odds they connecting any issues, when in fact they well know it is already the main cause for failures in our cars but WILL NOT accept it cause it would detract future sales of diesels in USA

I have a different angle on this. I wonder if DIY types like me could get this done where we pull the intake off, bring into service department and have the cleaning done, and reinstall ourselves. Seems that would trim the cost considerably.

I came close to doing the removal and cleaning myself but stopped thinking this is stupid to risk warranty issues. I'm with Axel/PR, bring on the service bulletin.

I can't see dealers allowing that. They'd want to do all the work so they could get maximum money. Plus if anything went bad they'd blame your part of the work as the reason why it went bad.

You're better off finding the machine they use and see if you can rent it somewhere.

I don't disagree. I was taught the axium that if you don't ask, the answer is always no. Back in the day, I pulled the transaxle out of my 75 Scirocco. Dad and I hauled it down to the local VW dealership in the back of his truck and they rebuilt it for me. We put it back together afterwards.

When the manifold is in stock its fairly cheap, seems unlikely that the dealership would do the cleaning for less than a new manifold, if the manifold is all they're cleaning
