Welcome Holjon!
Though the 177 is a 'new engine', DMS mapped the 'old' 163 version up to 209bhp (www.dmsautomotive.com) - they're expensive but have excellent aftersales etc from what I understand. Believe Superchips do it and Chiptune also, no doubt amongst others. That's all I know, as I was investigating it for my 120d but never got round to it. DMS would have been my choice, as much for their thoroughness as for the fact that I live close by. A couple of the guys here have remaps on 320ds, so no doubt one of them will impart their wisdom. Also see this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94011 Let us know what you go for. |

Just spoke to DMS. At this time there is no work that can be done to chip the new diesel engined 320. Apparently the ECU is encrypted and so may never be able to alter the map. Shame.

I asked DMS the same question about my 320i (yes Carlos I know the gains wouldn't have been worth it - before you start), and got the same answer. Because I knew that it might not be that lucrative for them to remap NA 2.0 petrols, I wondered if they just couldn't be bothered, but thought it unlikely. Sounds like there was a BMW conspiracy after all!! I think people remapping basically takes BM's profits away. They have a finely structured range, the prime example being 325d buyers get the same engine as 330d buyers effectively (though not exactly - but a remap can really close the gap), so they could buy a 325d and map it, and save a packet, and BMW lose out. Everyone's quite correct - the new ECUs in the latest-build cars have more advanced encryption on them so it's proving very difficult to remap the ECUs. You can install piggy-back modules instead, but that's not technically a remap.. As far as I know, Birds/Hartge UK are the only company who can get through the encryption, as they have links to a programming team in Germany who have the direct access to the ECU software...

And they charge you for it!!! £1200 for a remap, and only 13hp gains..... not so attractive.

Yes, not the cheapest... don't know about the gains though - I have a feeling the PDF file on the website is wrong as I think it still refers to the old engine... not sure though so don't quote me!

I assume that a tuningbox should still work with the 320d (177). Should take it up to about 210.

I have a Steinbauer P-Box on my 163 320d - works very well. They're specific to specific models, but you could check with them, Steinbauer UK have been very helpful.

I was just reading the WDS on the 320i (thinks its N45 engine) and the S verion os the engine used for touring cars that outputs 275hp.
I guess the are probably not many parts that have not been changed though. |

Incidentally, if it's high-level, very few places are managing to crack the code. Birds/Hartge is one, and the others as far as I am aware use external piggyback boxes.

Hmm. I don't know, but while you might be right that, fundamentally, the engine is the same, there appears to be a lot more "gubbins" bolted onto it.
So, encryption aside, I'm not sure that a 177 could run a map from a 163. I very much doubt it.

a 177hp can NOT run the map from the 163hp as you say, but the 177hp engine in a 120d uses the same map as the 177hp engine in the 320d (which I think was the original question)

Hi,
Has anybody in this forum tried this plug and play tuning chip for the 320D 177HP ? http://www.chiptuningdirect.com/bmw/...0kw_cr_en.html

Is this a plug and play box where you can install the chip by yourself in 5 minutes without any ECU/Software update etc. ?

you can always stick a tuning box on, they WILL work. Not as good as a re-map but never the less if no re-map is available this is the only option.
