We visit AUTOWORLD; Brussels, Belgium
AUTOWORLD Parc du Cinquantenaire 11 1000 Brussels Belgium Tel. : +32 2 736.41.65 http://www.autoworld.be/ Opening hours : From 01.04 to 30.09: 10:00 > 18:00 From 01.10 to 31.03: 10:00 > 17:00 When my good friend Rudi aka gs/e60/1m? first told me that there will be a huge Porsche exhibit on display in Brussels - I knew I just had to go for a visit! And I am so glad I did!! Never before had I seen such historic cars landmark cars from Porsche! A lot of the cars were on loan by Porsche Museum, but there were also quite a few cars I had NEVER seen before. And as you guys know... I do get around to most every cool automuseum in Germany! I think Autoworld deserves to be on any car lover's radar. If your in Europe/Brussels... I highly recommend this museum. My plan was to drive up to Brussels (on the last weekend of the show/display Jan 19th) and meet up with Rudi gs/e60/1m? and Luc @Artemis. But as all good plans go to hell... I had to move up my visit and Luc was out of town - unfortunately. My plan was to first drive to Spa and visit the small Monastery in the small city. Then visit the small auto museum there on Spa's famous race cars(more on that museum in another thread soon!). Then Rudi and I would drive into Brussels and see the 50 years of Porsche collection at the Autoworld. Later that evening Rudi and I met with @eeghie and sampled a few nice Belgium beers at a very nice Pub. More on that later. The Autoworld is situated in downtown Brussels. If you never been to Brussels it reminds me of Washington DC with better paved streets and the tree's there in Brussels are HUGE! Easily 100+ years old. The city is very pretty and is the seat of power for the EU. I would recommend a visit! Anyways... the Autoworld was quite a nice museum. The building/Hall(Parc du Cinquantenaire 11) was built by designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, I believe the hall was built in 1889. You can see Eiffel's uses of steel in the making of the arches of the hall/arena. We ran out of time looking at all the cars inside the Autoword. Rudi and I wanted to go next door to the Brussels Military Museum afterwards. I guess this will be an excuse for me to return to Brussels. Rudi recommended this really cool beer brewery called Het Anker. Some pics at the end of my foto essay. Needless to say it was a GREAT weekend! Before showing you my pictures though... here are a few from the Autoworld's own website on the temporary display of "50 years of Porsche" exhibit. I am really glad I made the trek. Rudi's Smurf 1M... Autoworld - Brussels Now onto MY photos...

a few more...
Every museum tour ends in the Gift Shop! lol by the time we finished touring the museum hall... we were one of the last to leave. I can not tell you how Grand this place imposes on one. I found it very cool! Rudi recommended this cool old brewery to stay over night at. It was called: Brouweru Het Anker While the rooms were ok, the food and staff were really nice! And the food was very, very good!! Especially thier Christmas beer that was on tap. Not only did they make their own beer here, but also brandy and Chocolate AND cheese! I will come back here again! It was a really good restaurant/bar! Rudi's Smurf Blue 1M... The hotel rooms...

It is a very nice place. Went there a few years back and it was very interesting to see. Lots and lots of cars. Brussels itself is a very nice place too. Definitely worth paying a visit.

Awesome photos, in terms of both quality and coverage, as usual.
I attended on the last weekend. Would have missed out entirely if I'd known the M3/M4 were waiting for me at the Brussels Autoshow, as I would have gone there instead. Luckily that went on for another week, and I ended up seeing both. Interestingly my brother said that first Porsche electric car (I believe the one beside the 918 show car) is newly on display at the Porsche museum Zuffenhausen. National Public Radio (NPR) in the USA had program over the weekend with a representative from the Porsche museum, talking about the car. The rep claimed it had been stored in a warehouse up until now. It really was an impressive selection! Thanks |

Absolutely unbelievable stuff. Wow!
I have to say (in my opinion of course), I'm not sure there's anything more beautiful in the automotive world than seeing the progression of the 911 from birth to where it is today. It truly is remarkable how timeless that design is. |

The 911 has never met everyone's needs, but I'm glad it exists, and that it has existed fairly true to concept for so many years. It is an interesting reflection on automotive history. |

Nice! Thanks for sharing.
When does the Porsche exhibit end? I'll be in Germany late April and was thinking of visiting Spa and Brussels, I would love to check this out. Also, what's up with the monastery in the small city? Might add it to my places to visit

Hi. The Porsche exhibit at AutoWorld ended 19 Jan. But check out Dackelone's museum guide for other great auto related sights to see while in Germany. And of course there is always the NurburgRing, and the Porsche Museum proper (in Zuffenhausen), both spectacular stops. Good luck

Thanks for your kind words and also for adding your pics of the evolution of the 911. I found it hard to capture those staggered 911's on display there. The entire exhibit was by far the BEST displays of Porsche's I have seen anywhere. The Porsche Museum pulled quite a few cars out of their museum for this Brussels show. I am very glad I was able to see this "special" Porsche collection. Yes, the (old)car standing next to the 918 Concept was in fact the very first hybrid Porsche. It had RWD gasoline engine with FWD electric hubs. Ferdinand Porsche(Ferry's father) designed and built it. I also heard that it is now on display in the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen(Stuttgart). What really blew me away about this show in Brussels was some of the cars on display I had never seen ANYWHERE. Like the KdF Beetle prototype, the Berlin to Rome rally car(I thought there were only three made and Porsche has a bare bones chassis on display at the P-Museum). I think it helps now that VAG owns everything and can pull resources from Audi Tradition and the VW Museum in Wolfsburg. I know Porsche Classic has a new secret warehouse with some 650 cars in storage near Zuffenhausen. The Porsche Museum only holds about ~80 cars currently. That's much better than their old tiny museum(pre 2006) inside the old factory gates which had only 18 cars! In some ways the old museum was better. It was a more personal, pilgrimage to the Porsche Factory. But I do relish any chance I can visit the Porsche Museum. I have been lucky enough to visit many, many times. Quote:
While I was up North in the "flatlands" I also visited a few other cool museums. Look for them on the front page of Bimmerpost.com soon. And for my ED tips and museum thread(s) just click on the link bellow my sig.

Dackel, Is this a Jaguar E-Type roadster with a roof riveted onto it with a different decklid? It looks much more muscular and streamlined compared to a regular E-Type coupe. I want one.

I had to look at my high res photos of that car to read the display sign at the LR wheel. The museum sign says its a: Jaguar E-type "Light Weight - Low Drag". 6 cylinder, 3761cc, 300Bhp, and a top speed of 274 kph. According to the website bellow... only ONE car was made! WoW! I had no idea at the time when I took the photos. Have a look at this website... http://www.jaguarrecreations.com/index.php/lowdragcoupe Also check out the Museum's FB page: Autoworld Brussels They post lots of pics of their new exhibits. I can tell you I will be going back there soon!

Wow, I had no idea that particular Jag was so rare. Now I just need to find a way to save some serious cash, find a donor car, and take it to that Jaguar Recreations company to build my own Low Drag Coupe.
