245-45-18 snows

Guys, I know this has likely been played out several times before but here we go again. I have an opportunity to purchase 4 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2's used one season for $400 cdn. The size as stated above is 245-45-18. they will be installed a 18 x 8.5 rim 38mm offset. I have 10mm and 15mm spacer on my 19" that I can use to adjust the offset. All this on a 2006 E90
Will these work. I know they are a tall tire at 26.68 dia.

Thanks in advance for your input

other than rubbing - it will be like a snowboard on the snow. I guess U see a lot of snow in Ontario. I'd weight the function more over style, think about that

245 is way too wide - the handling characteristics of the car will be quite soft with the ratio, and also your speedo will be out. Plus more importantly, it's too wide for good traction in the snow. Why do people insist on using big wide wheels for winter?! It's crazy - the whole point is to increase the tyre contact patch with the road so that there's less ice/snow underneath the tyres. Having wide tyres/big wheels in winter, especially where you guys are as it doesn't apply to the UK, is asking for trouble.

Stick to the standard 235 size tyres for the 8.5J wheels

^^^^ nicely said. Maybe a small correction - the thinner tires are more likely to bite through the snow (pushing it sideways) and make contact with the road and get more traction. The wider the tires, the higher the likelyhood of keeping the snow under them (= 0 traction).

THat'd be what I meant - said reduce instead of increase

At least I did say that the wider tyres were stupid...!!!

common mistake. A friend of mine almost killed himself in a car accident. He thought driving an AWD on all seasons makes him superior over FWD or RWD cars. Well - OK, he accelerated better on snow, OK, he could corner... well somehow, and he laffed at me when I told him it's fine but how does 4x4 help him with breaking? So he was driving like an asshole in snow and ice cuz he's AWD and ended up screwed around a tree, half dead.

Conclusion - AWD gives U better traction for acceleration, better scrape out of the snow, but won't help U breaking, so don't drive like an asshole

dont do it. You shouldn't go wider that 225's with snow tires for your car. In fact, I'd even recommend 215's. Also, I'd recommend 17's, not 18's for your car.

i agree there are cars that can handle better then i but then again im not going out in a blizzard, so if you have very light snow ur fine with xdrive. Then again if u are driving on ice i dont care what you have your screwed, you can't defy the laws of physics with snow tires or 4 wheel drive
