Buyers Remorse...custom cat-back
i am so depressed....seriously....i spent $900 for a cat-back exhaust with magnaflow mufflers that doesn't sound as good as i thought it would. i'm just not happy with it. now, i feel like 10 hp and average sound wasn't worth $900.
what can i do? i don't believe they will refund my money and I don't think i can sell it either. serious responses only please i feel like

What exactly don't you like about the sound? Too deep? Drones? Not loud enough? Too loud? etc..

well, it drones like crazy at low rpms and then once the revs get higher...it sounds almost like a stock exhaust...which is pretty much like nothing....

Or adding some sound deadening material to the area where your spare would be. Something like Dynomat. Shragon has a small write-up on it.

will adding a resonator kill the sound in the high revs also?

I spent 995+ shipping on the britalman. I think they all drone and an I6 will never sound like a v8 no matter what you do. I am happy with mine, but I have a second (beater) car that I use some of the time. Sorry you are not happy, but that's what happens when you go custom, you never know what the end result will be until it is already made.

Damn that sucks man, to my knowledge adding a resonator will not 'kill' the sound in the higher revs. You might be pleased with the reduction in drone by adding a resonator, but not expect anything louder then what you have in the higher revs.

e90ice....are you getting V2? reason I ask is because there's been some talk on the board that v2 sounds much more "throaty" at higher rpms on what I believe was a stock exhaust. So I'm wondering how yours might sound with a V2?

The higher end companies spend quite a bit of time developing their systems to have just the right sound and tone, and as you've seen, sometimes a good sound is not easy to achieve! Certain cars are more temperamental when it comes to exhaust tuning- you could put any exhaust you wanted on the E36 M3 and it would sound fantastic, but try the same thing with an E46 M3 or an E92 335i, and you'll run into trouble!

On that note i really can not see how a company can take away the drone. Do some companies crimp the crap out of the 2.5" piping to get the perfect sound? To me it seems to be all about the muffler design because there is not that much room to tinker with the midpipes design. Still, a straight through muffler has to produce drone on this engine. I already trusted one company and i got screwed (no drone my ass!) i don't know why i should trust anyone else, especially considering that there's a large ammount of posts on here supporting the drone issue.

I bet the drone is bad between 2000 and 2500 rpm, the same speed these cars cruise on the freeway at. Well, calculating the rpm and length of exhaust will help you figure out what frequency resonates your pipes. Most resonators are designed to kill higher frequencies, not the low ones causing the drone. This stuff about resonators killing drone is pure speculation.
I know, I worked through three systems on my car dealing with the drone issue. Bends, crimps and baffles are the best thing to kill drone. + Resonators will dampen the part of the sound you most like! Best bet is to just spend the money and buy a system from a manufacturer who has spent the $$$ in research and development. |

I would like to hear CP-E's. If you look at theirs and compare it to my Britalman, there is no difference in the piping, just a difference in the mufflers. I don't see how theirs does not drone at all per Swoop. One of life's great mysteries! Pictures below (Britalman then CP-E):

^ One difference from those pics is that the britalman doesn't appear to have an Xpipe like the CP-E. It could just be the pic though, I don't know much about the britalman.

I still think that muffler design will have the biggest affect on the final sound though. A perfect example would be with a 350z since different exhaust manufacturers have taken very different approaches with that car and the final exhaust sound has varied a lot with that car. For example, a company like fujitsubo kept the same approach as stock with a large single muffler underneath the car that branches out into two tips, while others like Greddy and HKS built canister type exhausts that produced a totally different exhaust sound despite both of them having very similar exhaust piping in terms of route and size. I know that its a different platform, but I thought it was a good example since the mufflers used for that car vary a lot more then they do on the 335. There aren't too many HKS cans on a 335 that I have seen, thank God.
