almost all turbo cars typically use any standard fully synthetic 5w-30... 10w-30 is a little safer, especially for cold starts. mobil 1 burns pretty fast. royal purple is pretty good, as well as the standard BMW branded synthetic made by castrol. but i always use motul.... except for on the M Coupe since it calls for the Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W-60... and the only other brand i know that makes a 10W-60 is a japanese brand called fusion and its like insanely expensive.

335i will call for any synthetic oil with the BMWLL01 or BMWLL04 rating.
Examples are: - BMW High Performance Synthetic 5W30 - Castrol Syntec 0W30 (not 5W30 in North America!) - Mobil1 0W40 - Amsoil European Formula 5W40 |

Thanks guys... I'll most likely go with one of these...
- Castrol Syntec 0W30 - Mobil1 0W40 will these be ok for cold winter starts in NY?

Absolutey. The lower the first number, the easier it pumps through the lines while cold. Very good stuff. My personal preference is Mobil1 as I have no experience with Castrol.

I was running Mobil1 0W40 last winter and had a number of -30 degrees celius starts with no problems. I am now running the Syntec 0W30 and my car seems to like it... haven't had any really cold starts yet this year. Both have very cold pour points (like -52 degrees Celsius for the Mobil and something like -48 Celsius for the Castrol). Both are top notch products from my experience with each... the car does seem to get slightly better fuel economy with the Castrol Syntec, I should mention. |

I run Mobil1 in all of my cars. In the 335i I run Mobil1 0w40.

really? my S2000 was 5.5 and my 330ci was right at 6 if i remember correctly... i just did a quick search on google and came up with that. that seems like a lot but i wouldn't be surprised since high revving cars and turbo cars tend to burn oil easily, and to add fuel to the fire, i think you could safely consider the 335i a relatively high revving turbo.... 7 quarts wouldn't surprise me at all... the easiest way to find out is to look in your manual. i'd bet you an oil change it's in there.

I have used Mobil1 for years, however when I read the specs. For the 335i it sounds like the only Mobil1 product that will do is the 0w40. ![]() Red

Just buy whats recommended by BMW for the car. Buy the oil and filter from your dealer and your good to go. My last 2 cars were turbos and i used what the manufacturer recommended,Mobil 1 10w30 for all year around use. When i do my first oil change i will get the oil and filter from the dealer,(BMW).

On the other hand, Castrol Syntec 0W30 sold in North America is BMWLL01 approved. Mobil1 0W40 is also BMWLL01 approved (5W30 Mobil1 is not BMWLL01, nor is 10W30). |
