Question Run Flat debate Again!

Guy's, I know this has been discussed a thousand times and perhaps the jury is still out.

What I'm interested in is has anyone actually had a puncture on a non run flat and used Tyre Weld / Foam?
Did it work and were there any complications when you went to get the puncture repaired or the tyre replaced?
I have heard all the usual horror stories from the Stealers about having to replace the wheel etc.
Yet in all the debates on this and other forums I haven't actually seen anyone state they have successfully used it.

I'm still undecided.

This is what i learnt yesterday when i went with a friend to replace his run flat..

The tyre shop recommended using non run flats be because the tyre wall/lip is very very rigid on run flats and when you hit a kerb or a pothole because there is very little cushioning for the alloy and therefore most get cracked.

He was telling me this even though the quote i had from him for run flats was about £200 odd more than the non run flats.

also, BMW on the F30 series (new 3 series) don' put run flats on them. i spoke to two dealers near me, one Sytner and one Barons and both told me this was because of the amount of cracked alloys they've seen on previous 3 series models.

and the ride is much better on non run flats.

p.s. i have run flats and will be changing to non run flats as soon as my tyres need replacing. mainly because i can't afford to hit a pot hole and Fk up my alloy(s). and there are a lot of pot holes on my journey to work etc etc. (one is 3 foot wide! wtf)

also ref tyre weld (the can stuff). the guy said its cr@p and 9/10 times doesn't even work.

The verdict came in eons ago and runflats suck.

The marginal saftey benefit you get from potential punctures is not worth the added weight, side wall issues and sacrifice in handling you get from using them.

Yeah id be interested to know about this mobility kit, does the can stuff actually work?
im getting new wheels this week and moving to non run flats, but obviously dont have a spare wheel...

Runflats are crap period! You need to drive. Similar car with non runflats and then you'll see for yourself! Get the tyre weld and breakdown cover. As everyone has experienced, the switch to non runflats is AMAZING!

The issue is that, the stiffness has to come from the suspension/ anti roll bars/ chassis and not from the tyres!...

This provides you with a fall sense of stiffness!....

I like stiff rides too!


And not sure about everyone blaming RFT for cracked wheels.

The BMW wheels crack because they are shit and BMW fucked up!!!....Stop blaming potholes, UK roads, Run Flat tyres and polar bears.

To the OP, I haven't used the tyre weld luckily as I have never had a puncture.

Actually, I have had a puncture but because I checked my tyre pressure every week. I 've noticed the drop in pressure and checked the whole tyre for a nail and I found it!.... Pump the tyre to 40psi and drove to the local tyre place to get it repaired!

Only proborn is if you had a can of tyre weld for example and had a blow out at 80 mph for example. By the time you have pulled over the tyre will probably be shreaded which a can of tyre weld will not fix! I don't have runflats either but at least it's safe to drive off a dangerous road with them which I think is key for a family

You can still have a blow out on a RFT and if you did, you certainly won't be driving home on it!

Runflats, to me personally, offer no plus points!

They are too stiff, too noisey, not enough confidence, too expensive and help damage alloys!

90% of cars have none run flats and they are all happy!

My advice is get yourself non runflats!

If you change to non run flats what happens to the audible puncture alarm? Can you or do you have to have it turned off or disengaged? How much money are we talking about saving on non run flats opposed to run flats?

Even if you did you would still have the stiff side walls attached to rim at least and maybe drive out of danger. If you have a flat tyre on standard you will damage the sidewall before stopping as heat will have built up in the rubber and it will seperate then your tyre weld is usless.

I also don't use rub flats but these are my points on plus which aint many

Having just changed my wifes merc off run flats have to say again. RFT work but not in UK.

When we got the car I couldnt believe how much it rattled and how harsh the 18" where on the road. After a she damaged a tyre back in July and it needed a new one at xmas finally had enough of the RFT. as she was keeping the car changed over to set of falken 453. Car is like another model. Ride is smoohter, no rattles inside. Totally different better ride.

In this case had space for a space saver in the boot so stuck it in and done. In my E90 just drive with a can of goo. If I do get a puncture and I have recently can use it or as I did on last occasion drove home as wass only 5 miles from home after pumping up the tyre and had the wheel fixed.

In germany where their B roads are smoother than our Motorways I can see RFTs are great but no there
