Glow plugs

Hi can someone tell me how glow plugs work.
I was under the impression that it only works when the car starts.
Is that so or does work while driving.
And what would be the symptoms of faulty glow plugs.

There are probably a few million links out there if you search glow plugs. Yes they are used on start up, specifically as temperatures get lower they will heat longer. The 335d has a very fast heating set of plugs...

Rough idle/start would be one of your symptoms. All 6 would have to be changed if this turns out to really be your issue.

The bmw dealership says I have errors on all my glow plugs. It doesn't really start difficult. And my thermostat has errors
