power steering
evening all,
car is going in tomorrow for MOT and steering issues. i had the belts replace about 6 months ago as they shredded off but i still mentioned that the steering is still heavy and not driving in straight lines. long story short they said no issues but wheel alignment needs to be done costing £300 for the front wheels not covered by AUC! now it makes a grinding noise on full lock both sides but only when i accelerate or rev the car (will try and upload the video). each time i rev it grinds…. when i had a courtesy car a brand new X5 it did this as well? anyone else have this or know what the issue could be before i get fobbed off as AUC runs out in a month? any help appreciated thanks theo |

I hear the same noise for a month now. when I accelerate (normally) with 1st gear for 1"-2" only you can hear this noise...if I press the gas pedal harder in order to accelerate quicker the engine revs higher and you cannot hear something..I went to specialist back in greece and he said that its the upper pulley same as yours..but what if the noise comes from the other 2 pulleys that the belt has in order to give tension to it? does anyone knows if you have to replace all the pulleys?
I only have 45k miles and I didn't expect that..the belt seems to be in perfect condition and I don't know when it is supposed to need replacement (07 model, n46). finally, there are few videos on youtube showing how a worn pulley operates in comparison with a new one.

got a call and the alternator is also damaged! it has been moving and damaging the pulleys so awaiting parts but luckily all covered under AUC, but annoying, as this should of been picked up when the belts shredded the first time!! BMW admitted that they should of checked the reason for the original damage but that doesn't help. now have to wait over a week for the parts from Germany. have a courtesy 63 plate 320d, sorry to say but not liking the new 3 series!

a bit off topic but I also don't like the interior of the new 3er...it might be better build quality but seems cheap since they tried to reduce the use of expensive wooden, aluminum etc parts, replacing them with cheaper plastic ones.
what is the feel from driver's side? driving accuracy and ride quality? cause they say that new 3er is top 1

not impressed in fairness. very light steering and feels big like the older 5 series….
decent engine, with pick up speeds, mpg and smooth gearbox. but remove the badges and not sure you could say you were in a BMW. i don't like the way the new screens are sticking out like a sore thumb! driving position is nice enough. i only had the car for 3 days so didn't get to check it out properly so some comments might seem unfair and it was a 320d without all the refinements. was getting near on 50mpg which is near on double of mine……… but very happy to have mine back! |
