Engine malfunction reduced power
Im new in the forum and i have a question i have a 335xi e90 n54 engine
When floor my car over 4k or 5k revs appears on cluster a half yellow engine The first time i noticed this i tought i was the famous HPFP but i dont think so, I never had long crancks my engine start easy every time i touch the boton, even when this symbol appears my car still running strong, if i turn off the engine and then restart the symbol its gone, i have almost one year w this symtoms, what could be? Im concerned about stability at speeds over 100mph, when hit a pothole or an uneven surface on street at high speed my car jerks to one side and steering ussually follows the imperfections on the road, i dont know if its for the runflats or its anything wrong w the car. |

How many miles on the car? When's the last time you changed your plugs and coils? Have you ever had it checked for carbon buildup? Also, does it ever store any codes? Try to get some codes. The symptom "sounds" like HPFP imo but there's too many unknowns to be sure.

It's the intake valves under your intake manifold. kinda a pain to take it off and look. There's a way to do it with a borescope too that doesn't require removing the manifold. At that much mileage you probably have some. That's why I was curious if you've ever changed plugs or anything else. It could be a combination of both those also. Old plugs + buildup.

I have similar issue too which occurs randomly when I go WOT. My car get the half engine light and loses half the power until I turn it off and turn it back on. My OBD2 reader doesn't have any error code. I took it to a local BMW mechanic and they scanned it with their tool and they said it could be anything; I.e. vaccumm leak etc.. I already did the shell blasting and changed the sparkplugs couple months ago. I currently have a small oil leak which I will be bringing it to the shop so they can change the gasket covers. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

How many miles on your car? Have you ever replaced the HPFP, cause the half engine light's kinda notorious when the HPFP goes. And do you mean the gasket on your valve cover? I don't think that would cause your half engine light, probably will fix your oil leak though.

Without getting too much into it, in general it just affects performance. Check these out:

The engine malfunction can be more than just the carbon build up and HPFP. It can also be the VANOS solenoids and the injectors. I cleaned my solenoids and it never did it anymore. Also a vaccum leak. You can check the lines next to the filters see if there's any leakage or the charge pipe itself. Cleaning the solenoids takes no more than 30 mins, very easy and might save you the headache. Also, some 335i's from 07 to 09 had a recall for the injectors, so new free injectors if your car is between those years.

You did indeed!
My point is that everyone looks for $3k solutions, before looking for the simplest most basic and common ones. It's like when your pc can't get to the internet, start logging into the router and switch and then call your internet provider. Couldn't be the patch cable, nah, too easy.... |

He said in the first post he has the reduced power half yellow engine symbol. That means he definitely has stored BMW codes. That is the easy way to figue out the problem. At 60k miles he definitely has MAJOR carbon on the intakes but that by itself probably won't cause his codes. VANOS solenoids definitely would and they usually reset on a restart.
