Why are my front tyres more narrow?

What are the benefits to this and how does it change the driving dynamics?

Also I heard that despite tyre width differences the size of the contact patch stays the same.

It makes driving slow in parking lots easier to steer and a little more understeer during higher speeds (i.e. safe). All cars from the factory have to be biased to understeer for safety (oversteer is more difficult for non-professionals to catch).
If you put the same width tyres on front and rear you can balance out the car to have less understeer.

I have no idea where or why anyone would say despite the tyre width the contact patch stays the same. It's complete BS.
