Install Solid state HD
Hey all. I'm wanting to install a permanent storage solution for music in my '11, 500GB+. Obviously iPods would not work, but wondering about putting a solid-state hard drive in there. A regular hdd wouldn't due to the spinning disk. Would this work? Not looking to purchase a solid state to find out that it doesn't work though. Or other cheap solutions?
Thanks! |

If you're planning on hooking up via USB, I doubt a single USB port will provide enough power to operate an SSD (on most computers it requires two USB ports)

Hook it up where? The USB port on the arm rest?
If you get a Sata to USB kit for hard drives, they will need to use 2 USB ports. One for data, one for power. For power you can use one of those cig lighter to USB dongles . And for data you can use the USB input. |

The trouble is the time it takes to read the index.
Even with only a large USB stick the time it takes to read the index is large. People have been doing PC drives through the USB for awhile though. |

I'm using a Nexus 7 permanently mounted for mediavia bluetooth. It also provides GPS, V1 integration and OBD diagnostics.

Do you really need that much music in your car? I've got an older ipod classic (I think the newer ones are 160gb) which can get me across the country several times. And it's not hard to change the load on your device from your larger music library.

As others have mentioned, the indexing time is an issue - at least it is with an HDD - it takes forever. I have heard of people upgrading the drives in old iPod Classics to something in the 240GB range... |

No one needs that much at once, but it's about want. I understand where he's coming from as I want my entire music library with me at one time as well - and I have it on a 64 gb stick (my library is obviously much smaller!!).

I'm using a 500gb Lacie Rikiki plugged in to the USB port, and it works like a charm. I find it a lot more practical to navigate between folders than the iPod I had.
It probably takes between 30 seconds to 1 minute from the moment I enter the car and music starts playing, which means that by the time my car is out of the garage music is playing. I have a bit over 120Gb of lossless music now, not sure if it would take a lot longer if the drive was close to full capacity. |

http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10517 I have the 500Gb USB 2.0 version, but it also exists in 1Tb version and with USB 3.0. Not sure if the 1Tb version works in our cars, though. @dbhughes: glad I could help! Enjoy your music |

As far as the power issue, keep in mind that computer components use 12V DC like car electronics do, so you can probably jury-rig the power to come from a cig lighter or hardwired to the car somehow, but you'd probably want a voltage regulator as well since the voltage fluctuates sometimes.
