Credit card hacked!
So I get an automated call from my credit union saying there may have been some fraudulent activity with my card and to call them immediately. Turns out some a-hole got my check-card number and started ordering shit from Sky Mall, DSW and some website. Almost $600. They blocked the card before I even called them. So I have to wait for a new card and have to fill out some forms to get the funds back if the charges go through. The fraudulent charges are all "pending". My question is how did they get that 3 digit number on the back of the card? A website that I purchased something from had to have been hacked in order to get that info right?

Yes. The way they get the security code usually involves dishonest employees from a merchant you purchased from. I had my CC hacked after staying at hotel in Mexico city. The only time I used the CC was at the hotel so I knew it had to be someone there. They sent me a new card, and removed all the charges. It was a pain having to update all my monthly payments with the new CC info, but all in all not too bad.

It definitely sucks and first time I felt like I was mugged, somehow felt personally responsible, was freaked out for a while. Now it happened like 4 times since then, don't even worry anymore. I have 2 Chase cards, no paperwork on my part, just give them a call or log in online and click unauthorized charges, they take care of the rest. Sucks to update all the info on billpays and checkouts, but oh well.
Last one was from that whole Target fiasco few month ago |

I've been hit twice in the last year. One was for $600 at the Versace store in FL and another for 5000 euro in Italy. At least the banks are quick to flag the transactions and contact the card holder.
This country needs smart card credit cards ASAP or at the very least, the mobile processing units you see in other countries so that the card never leaves your site. Last edited by RR-NYC; 03-17-2014 at 05:17 PM.. |

I've had mine used last Thursday ($463, autoblocked) at a Walgreens I've never stepped foot in with a card I barely ever use (last transaction was 2 months ago). I call myself baffled over this one. None of my other bank accounts seemed to have been compromised so I could be in the clear.

Never found out what it was for, BofA blocked the transaction before it went through and called me. For all we know, dude could have gotten a lot of Peanuts, and scratchers.

I've had this happen a handful of times, but fortunately the bank eats all of the losses and so it doesn't affect me. I suppose indirectly it probably affects me a little bit if I think through the logic of what the bank, in turn, probably does to mitigate those costs, but I don't lose sleep over it.

This is why I never use my debit card for purchases. It is a direct link to my bank account. While there is still zero liability on me for fraud I am still out the cash until they credit my account potentially screwing up a payment on something else. I use a cash back credit card that I pay off every single month. I have yet to ever pay interest on it and reap the rewards for it as well.

I actually had my card data stolen maybe like a year or so ago. It was actually a card I had not used for years but still had in my wallet. My only guess is that since thats the only card I had with RFID and I never used the card and they did not steal the physical card is that they must have picked up the data using the RFID signal. Needless to say that card is closed and gone. |

Maybe 3 or 4 times with ours. Last time was when a local supermarket chain got hacked. We've been notified by Target, too. I've shopped at Target exactly once and it was last summer just to buy some packing material. The other times I have no idea how they got my number, but they do. My card is Chase, so it's it's pretty much hassle free with them. I watch my account carefully and check into anything I don't recognize right away. Like everyone else says, the biggest PITA is switching auto-pay account numbers.

I do know that if a thief uses your credit card to withdraw a "cash advance" from an ATM then the corresponding lender takes the hit. I've been the victim of both, but most recently I had some thief withdraw money from some ATM in Winnebago, Nebraska 10 minutes after I had used the same card to purchase dinner in Austin . For some reason I had randomly decided to check my online balance statement that day and so I was able to report the fraudulent activity immediately which the bank appreciated. I've seen ads for wallets that sequester your credit card's RFID signal and prevent the sort of "electronic theft" that you're referring to. A lot of them are very reasonably priced as well. http://www.corporatetravelsafety.com...er-p-1574.html |

If I remember correctly, it's more expensive for merchants to process payments run as credit but you're also more protected.

Got a call from AMEX today. Someone tried to buy something worth $3,400 on my daughter's card. AMEX new this was fraudulent and denied the purchase. We only allow my daughter to use it for emergencies and incidentals. WTF ! We are thinking it is still related to Target's pre-xmas hack. I know the feeling. Thx AMEX.
Oh, forgot. My Chase Visa was fraudulently used in Southern Illinois for $600 worth of Nike shoes. Chase denied the purchase. We need to switch to the system that is apparently better in the UK or Europe. Quickly I might add.

When Sears went away from their blue "in-house" card to the gold MC, I got it in the mail and promptly put it in my safe. Didn't activate it.
Some time later, I get a bill showing a $2K+ charge in Australia. Called the MC provider on the phone and told them, "Um, hate to break the news to you, but these aren't my charges. I've never been to Australia, but I'd like to. In fact, I never even activated the card." How they thieves activated my card without using my "home phone" number is beyond me (and it was a land line back then and no "spoof" programs existed on cell phones). Needless to say, the charges were reversed and I cancelled that card.

This is the exact reason if things are purchased online I usually go through paypal instead of putting in my credit card number. I know people will say, well paypal sucks yada yada yada, but so far I haven't had any issues and they offer a credit line similar to a credit card.
I've had a single fraudulent charge on my credit card a couple years back for $1000, but the card company caught it since it was about 1200 miles away from my residence and closed the card. Was never charged and haven't had a problem since then. |

Yes, it was sent to my house and I received it. I sent the products back to where they came from (a skincare company) and asked who ordered it. The lady on the phone even gave me the IP address of who ordered it, and it tracked back to a place in Houston, TX. But we all know how much the IP address really says, which is usually a dead end if they are professionals.
