2008 320d 54 mpg!

800 miles up to Newcastle for the weekend and back 54mpg. I'm Very impressed as we were 5 up and a boot full of luggage with the cruise control set north of 70mph. My E91 is far more economical than I thought she would be

That is pretty good! I gotta admit that is the one and only thing I love about my 320d. I average 48mpg for a 20mile commute 50/50 A road and Motorway and some spirited driving.

But on the other news http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=959871

That is a pretty good return on fuel consumption.

We traveled a 90 mile roundtrip, with A road and B road driving, hitting a little traffic (20 to 30 minutes) and achieved 42mpg in the 335D M Sport. Wife, two kids, our coats and other light stuff in the boot.

My father has the 325D M Sport (similar age car to mine with a few more miles on the clock) and achieved 56mpg on the same trip... I was shocked! Mum was with my father but otherwise, a relatively light car.

Is your car recently serviced? I think this would make a difference.

At least you can sleep peacefully at night without having to worry about timing chain issues...

That's awesome, I'm also an M47N2 owner, so 50+mpg is a myth.

Garage List
Are all of these figures from the fuel computer or do you all work them out tank to tank? I found a fairly large discrepancy on my last tank - 58 fuel computer vs 54 calculated. However, the computer calculated over 80 fewer miles as I accidentally reset it.

This time I reset everything at the same time so will see next time I fill up. Can report back if anyone's interested in the accuracy of the fuel computers.

My car is due its 3rd service in august however I did change the air filter before we set off, it was distgusting! I've had my car 6 weeks, I checked the filter as there is no mention in the service history of it being changed and it's the origional one from new so its nearly six years old. She can breath a lot easier now, even though the car has only done 30000 miles it was really dirty. I normaly average 52.3 mpg on my 90 mile a day round trip so the extra mpg could have been more air passing through the filter.

Gentlemen yes my engine is one of the dodgey timing chain affected range but it's bad form to try and rub someones nose in it, let's all get along we aren't in the play ground now!

This sounds like you may have not been treated too well by the service department at BMW, if having to change the air filter yourself. At least you know one of the causes of high fuel consumption.

Ahhh... make no mistake, in town I would be very lucky to achieve 24mpg!

I find it hard to believe but BMW only change the air filter on the third service so with the CBS thats six years! I got a new filter from euro car parts for £22 so I fitted it because of the newcastle trip and we are off on a touring trip around Scotland in July.

BMW are actually treating me very well, I bought the car end of January and a condition of the sale is that they pay for the next service parts and labour included which is in August.

I'm getting a rock solid 47.8mpg which I was hoping would be a little higher as my daily drive is 95% motorway and i set the cruise at 70mph. I live literally 2 minutes drive from the motorway and my daily commute is a round trip of 90 miles. The odd spot of town driving but hardly any. Will check condition of air filter etc and check the coolant temp in the dash now that I know how to access it just to make sure it's up to scratch and not running cool or blocked air filter.
