Will sports cars become boring when all cars are electric?

You're forgetting insane amounts of torque on demand, check the Benz SLS. 700+ hp. Technology isn't there yet that it's affordable or practical but it'll be there before too long.

I'd be more worried about the fact that they have no gears thus no manual transmission (or I guess transmission at all). But it seems most cars are going that way electric or not.

I guess it's just hard for me to get excited about it. Like think about a Lamborghini and the awesome sound and presense it has, how it roars when you start the engine. When all cars are electric, you start it up and it's quieter than a Prius. And the intricate engine is replaced with just a simple battery, and the only thing that will really seperate performance cars will be the brakes and suspension. Just hard for me to get excited about. The instant torque will be nice but all electric cars will have that whether it's a sports car or not.

That said, it's going to be quite some time before we're "all electric" and in that time I'm sure they'll come a long way. Will be different kind of fun but fun nonetheless. Just don't get the one that Clarkson built in a shed on Top Gear and I'm sure it will be ok. |

We'll also assume by the time we're all electric all the chemicals in the batteries won't be worse for the environment than a super clean combustion engine. Clean diesels can produce minimal emissions and Audi has a pretty successful lemans program, but we will run out of fuel eventually.

To the OP: it all depends what you get excited about. Nothing like the sound of a V8 with an aggressive cam, sure. But I don't think ALL the thrills will be lost.
Random thought: how cool would it be if go-carts were street legal and you could pop down to the shop with one? |

I wish every sports car had a 500HP, 500Tq supplemental electric motor to go along with the 500/500 gas engine. All I need is a small high voltage/discharge battery in the car that gives me a couple minutes of full juice. Something to give me 20-30 full 10 second pulls. Easy 1000 combined HP. You could even put the electric motor only on the front axles so you don't have to have the drive shaft front to rear. Ok, make that 1000HP electric motors since size and weight don't matter as much for an electric motor.

Just test drove a p85 Tesla Model S. I can most definitely say that it's much quicker than the stats show. The #s might show that it does 0-60 in 4.0 and the quarter at around 110+ mph, but the fact there is no downshifting - makes the car EXTREMELY responsive. It's like driving the car at maximum torque peak all the time. I was pretty impressed as I was cruising at 60 and I mashed the gas and it took off like I was in 1st gear! LOL
The CG is better, rotating mass is reduced much. I bet in theory, that a full fledged electric sports car would beat a gas sports car - albeit limited range. |

Soon enough we won't be talking about bhp
We'll be talking about how many Amps our batteries are And how we can tweak them to put out more current

I recall at some point reading touching the positive and negative terminals could lead to sparks
