Seriously, block your EGR (pictures inside)
I blocked my EGR in December and have been running water/meth since around August. The pictures speak for themselves.

Did you take off the manifold yourself Hooper? If so was it hard? Thinking of doing the same with an EGR block/clean if possible.

Those pics are amazing. Clearly the EGR is killing this motor. Will the car pass emissions with it blocked and running meth? Send these pics to BMW NA. Unbelievable.

Yeah, I was pretty pumped when the manifold came off and I actually saw bare metal runners |

Hooper, I'm assuming you were not running a catch can? Or at least I haven't read where you installed one... Seeing your pics make me think I may pull my recently added catch can out of the system since the EGR/meth combo is clearly working well.
Also, about how much H2O/meth are you using? From a cleaning perspective I'm curious in terms of gallons/mile to compare with what I'm injecting (summer months I'm about 1-2 gallons/1000 miles, winter months much less). |

Wow... Looks exactly like the VW TDI engines from 99.5-06. The EGR is the devil!
Looking forward to the stainless blockoff plates! Do you throw and check engine lights after you block the port? I had to have my ecu tuned for the delete on my old TDI. |

Nice pics and very good results! For those who have the catch can and meth combo without EGR blocking, it would be interesting to see how this setup compares with the EGR block/meth combo and if similar results can be achieved.

I'm using somewhere around 1.5 gallons per month, or around 1.5 gallons per 1800 or so miles. That is with my normal lazy commute, if I am driving hard or up more hills it is much faster. That's at a 50/50 mix. Yeah, you throw two codes every time you run the car. 4862 and 4B82. I clear them on the fly after I start the car, only takes a second or two and for me even calling it an inconvenience would be a huge stretch |

Your results are very interesting.
1. For those of us who have no choice but to keep the EGR operational for Emissions Purposes, I wonder how a meth kit alone would help with preventing build up. 2. Since your EGR is blocked off, do you still really need a meth kit. 3. Would a catch can alone prevent build up, since oil would no longer be introduced into the intake stream, creating havoc mixing with the EGR. Nonetheless, there is light at the end of the tunnel for the 335d in the US market. |

Blocking the EGR prevents particles which have really no sticky power lol so to say the oil is what traps everything. So a Catch can + meth may be an ideal alternative but remember it doesnt block 100% of the oil so some of it may still coat but at a much slower rate. I may add a methanol kit before summer so ill update you on that setup. Id like to hear what hooper has to say. Since hes already ahead of the game haha. |

Where are the block off plates available? I was back and forth with TDIwyse in another thread about specs for making these. Unfortunately time has been an issue but I just got my hands on a spare EGR cooler because I'd like to develop a block-off that retains the stock cooler in place (for visual inspection) but blocks both ends off. I might have some time to make this happen soon. This thread certainly is motivation.....

HOOOP! I couldn't be happier than to see those results. Was the "before" pic also before meth or just before EGR block? I haven't blocked off my EGR, but have been running meth for a few months now and will be seeing how the runners looks in the nearish future.
This does confirm a funny suspicion I have though. I often drive with the meth turned off, mostly during warm-up and cool-down (to prevent pooling) and my wife commented that it feels a lot healthier lately (w/ no meth) than it was pre-installation. I've also noticed progressively improving mpg. Hopefully your images are a sign of things to come. @TDIwyse and @Hoooper, I've been burning through about 1.5g every 500mi...now you've reaffirmed that I will be installing the smaller mpg nozzle that arrived in the mail earlier this week (I would say that my heavy foot might be the problem, but I don't think you gents are wearing featherweight sneakers either) @2deerwhistlers, let me know when you get those plates fabbed up, brother. @BOTUS, lol. I do think the scare is a bit overblown, but there have been some select instances of "catastrophic" failures caused by the issue. Personally, I'm all for preventing possible future headaches.

Oh my!! I like this result. I am confused though. I thought I had been reading that blocking the EGR would crack the EGR cooler.
