Removed turbos.

Turbos are out and ready to order some new ones. It is definitely a pain in the arse. In the last three days I've walnut blasted the valves, replaced oil pan gasket and removed the turbos. Now I just need to get them ordered. All started by some white smoke and a whole lot of oil all over the engine. Should have just pulled the motor and had it steam cleaned. Lol.

Very interested in this. I always thought that was something I wasn't going to be able to do myself.

I'm really glad to see this, nice to know someone is getting experience replacing their turbos…btw, how difficult was it to drop the subframe? How did you do it? couldn't really find it on the bentley manual…

Pretty sure in going to go with RB. Was on the fence about just getting stock again or RB. But I decided I might as well get the RB since I already went through the hassle of taking them out.

It took me about five hours. But keep in mind I already had the subframe down since I did my oil pan gasket. Subframe is pretty easy to drop. Only took about hour. This is taking a lot breaks also since I'm doing it on jack stands.

Fairly easy to drop. I supported the engine with a engine support from harbor freight. I dropped the steering rack and there is a plastic coolant line that goes across the front this needs to be unscrewed. Two motor mounts need to unscrewed from the subframe. Remove the cross bar. Six bolts. I removed the sway bar to give better access. Disconnect the auto light level on the driver side. Then I used a floor jack removed the six subframe bolts lowers it. It will just hang there once you remove the floor jack.

I just removed mine of jack stands. It was not too bad. I left my subframe and just removed the passenger motor mount. I had plenty of room but I am sure there is more if you lower the subframe. Glad to see others DIYing

I'm about to do this in the very near future. Replacement turbos are ordered, the original ones crapped at 100k miles (wastegate stuck open on rear turbo so I'll replace both).

I'll do this job on a car lift though, kudos to you for doing it on jack stands.

What was the hardest part of the job in your opinion?

Getting all the lines off the turbos was the worst for me.

Did you try using penetrating oil to remove the lines?

No, I bought used OEM turbos with 15k miles on them... $300 each. I don't have $3,500 to spend on performance upgrade...

Thanks for posting your experiences!

My waste gates are defective and need to be replaced. I was unsure of going the route of removing the subframe completely, and had safety concerns and apprehension relying on the Harbor Freight tool to provide the sole support of keeping the engine up simply by resting on the fender supports.

That is a steal. Either way the mods are cheaper than the maxima mods $/hp

It works. I just did my oil pan gasket this weekend and used the support bar from HF. I had no issues and had it in place for 3 days.

that lift doesn't look that bad, how much did that run you (cost)? With this engine lift, your not actually lifting the engine any amount, just holding it in place while working underneath?

I was. Definitely impressed with it. It's pretty beefy. Mine will be up there for about three weeks. Just ordered the RB turbos so I'm waiting for them. Until then I guess ill do a lot of engine cleaning to get all the grime and oil off everything. The oil gasket leak was horrible and got everywhere.

This one is about $10 cheaper than the HF support bar, and also free shipping... It also looks sturdier.
