FYI: New S4 confirmed to be a Twin turbo V6
Check out http://www.audiworld.com/news/07/b8-...usive-preview/. I guess I figured the V8 was too much of a gas guzzler and not modifiable. Plus they are no longer marketing the S4 against the M3. Now things get interesting again

Ok I need help. I'm completely lost with Audi's naming system for their model cars. Wasn't the S5 just released? I thought that phased the S4 out. Now they're bringing back the S4 thats lighter and more powerful than a S5? If I was an audi owner, I'd be pissed right now.

This is the car you guys will need to be comparing your 335i with and not the S5. It might not have as much power as the S5's V8 but I reckon it will have at least as much if not more torque and over a much wider rev range so I reckon it will be at least as quick and much more tune able, just like the 335i.
Plus it can be ordered with a LSD, unlike the 335i so it might just be a better driver's car as well. |

I agree. On paper, they all sound good, but whether it drives well is a whole different story.

Fair point and one I would agree with, whether this new quattro system makes all the difference is yet to be seen, though in any case would you want it to drive like a BMW, after all who wants every car to drive like the other. Every now and then it's nice to have a change as I am soon about to do.

Its what the manufacturer decides to put on the car out of the factory. I modified all my audis and definitely improved any shortcomings they had. A modified B8 S4 will probably handle just as well as a modified 335i. It gets down to the driver at that point..and the cahones.

S4 MSRP is $48,610. Unless Audi is willing to reduce the price for an upcoming vehicle (highly doubt it), it means that the S4 will sell for about $10,000 more than a 335i. No competition there.

I don't think Audi fans will be happy with the degrade in horsepower figures.
I don't think I've actually ever seen a performance car make less horsepower then the previous model. Another example that Audi loves to follow and never lead. Twin turbo 6cyl 3litre in the compact sport sedan catagory? It's been done. |

What? The B5 S4 was a twin turbo six cylinder, so does that make BMW a follower by introducing the 335? Many Audi fans were disappointed with the replacement of the 2.7L turbo with the V8, so I'm sure the B8 S4 will be a big hit among Audi fans.

I meant in the 3 liter catagory. But yes, the B6 S4 was a twin turbo 2.7L.
I'm very sure that if the 335i was indeed a V8, the B8 S4 would also stay V8. Audi's moves are always in heavy response to others. |

Audi had no choice. On the one hand you have the cheaper, less gass hungry, modable 335 - on the other you have the more expensive, gass voracious, unmodable S4; they simply had to fight back with a twin turbo 6cyl if they wanted to remain competitive. |

Anyway, it compared very well against my 335i in terms of options (no nav, 6MT, leather, etc.) I just couldn't see spending another $10k for the Audi. The other negative was the gas guzzling of the V8. I've already got a thristy V8, so I didn't need another one. That is one of the benefits of the 6 cylinder FI motor: the power is there when you want it, but so is the fuel economy when you don't need all that power.
