Clutch Finally Gave out (Spec 3+ Steel FW & UUC SSK Review Coming Soon)

Well my clutch has held on for a long time but 65k miles and over 500 torque has finally taken it's toll. Last week I did a ton of logs trying to figure out an issue and my clutch finally started to slip consistently. I was debating either selling the car or doing the clutch since it is not a cheap replacement. Wound up deciding i've put way too much money/time into it to just sell, so i'll do clutch and keep the car for a long time. I was going to do Stage 2+ but like I said I now plan on keeping it for a while and might go with a big turbo in the future if I can save up enough money. Anyways decided on Spec Stage 3+ with the steel SMFW and once it's in i'll do a review for you guys. If anyone has any install tips from when they did it or things to make sure not to do feel free to post and i'll pass along to the shop.

Dropping it off next Tuesday and leaving it at the shop for around a week while i'm away on vacation. I also decided to do the Rogue Engineering mounts and UUC Evo 3 SSK for the 335xi while i'm doing transmission stuff. Anyways below is the vid of how bad it's slipping. It's fine driving around town or stock map but once meth is flowing it can't hold well at all.

Once everything is in i'll do a review and try to get some other stuff like vids comparing the stock throw to the UUC SSK.

4/19/14:

Everything is in and I get to pick up the car tomorrow. While in there the shop found out the rear turbo inlet pipe was cracked and not sealing well. Replaced that and also switched from my stett to the Roc-Euro DCI. Def not a lot of clearance with the BOV and meth bung but it fits I guess

Dude, is the temp gauge normally like that? It went from halfway, to the cold end and then to the hot end in like no time whatsoever.

Gauge hijacking with JB4. When I go past 50% throttle the gas gauge turns into a boost gauge and the oil temp gauge turns into a meth flow gauge

The install isn't tough, just tedious. Only problems I had were getting the two top bolts. Once you get them broke loose, best thing to use to get them the rest of the way out is a 10 mm and 12 mm very short ratcheting wrench, worked like a charm. Other then that, pretty straight forward. You'll love it btw. I installed mine last week, put 600 miles on it so far and it feels wonderful. I do not know if you are planning on doing a transmission flush at the same time but if you do, DO NOT use the 75w140 that UUC says to use to quiet the flywheel chatter. It makes it impossible to shift into first from neutral. I flushed it with D6 ATF that redline says to use and it shifts so smooth. The flywheel chatter isn't even very noticeable after the 500 mile break in.

The pedal isn't that bad, it's only slightly firmer then stock (I have my helper spring removed as well). If you do have a clutch stop installed I would remove all the foam pads except for the one, with all the adjust pads in there you wont get into gear.

I did the swap last week, its not bad. A shop should have all the right tools. Specifically the clutch alignment tool and flywheel stop should be on hand.

Doesn't the spec come with the clutch alignment tool?

Thanks for the info glad to hear you like it so far. I think i'm running redline mt-90 and will probably stick to that

MT-90 is good, it is a little thicker then the D6 ATF so it should help quiet down the chatter slightly.

You'll like the UUC as well. I actually had them make a custom setup for my wife's to where the shifter started at the lowest adjustment and went down from there, she loves it.

Yes it does. Comes with everything but new Trans bolts and flywheel bolts. You need to get those separately. There are 5 aluminum trans bolts that need to be replaced, # 23 00 1 222 894.

It should, I just installed the 335is clutch so I crafted one up from scraps. Anyway report back and enjoy the new clutch when it's done.

How long did you clutch last with meth? I am at 24k with the stock clutch(stage2). I am actually thinking of doing rbturbos/protune on 93 this summer and doing meth/aquamist/clutch next spring.

^^ My clutch was fine with FBO until I added the 255 inline and E85 backend flash. At E60 it started slipping like crazy, that is at 32,000.

Mileage modifications and driving habits will vary how long the stock clutch lasts.

My other vehicles lasted in excess of 75K miles and my other beater is at 135K miles on stock clutch.

I've seen people have their clutches on this platform start slipping as early as 20K miles with FBO. Mine actually slipped around mid 20K miles with FBO and Meth. I think the Meth and the monster torque in the mid-range really attributed to the slippage, the pressure plate among the stock parts is the weakest link. The clutch itself was actually OK.

You can milk the stock clutch if you take some meat of the mid-range. I ended up taking 2-3 psi out before 5000 RPM. It would hold up top without a problem.

Anyway, if you plan on keeping power in excess of 400WHP and over 450WHTQ plan on replacing your clutch.

+1 mine started to slip at 45k and when I removed the clutch it had all kinds of meat left, strictly the pressure plate couldn't hold the power.

Update for you guys. Dropped the car off today around 7 and was sent pics about an hour ago. Oddly enough the actual clutch disk looks like it is in great shape. The pressure plate on the other hand... not so much.

Did you notice any difference with the Rogue Engineering Transmission Mounts? I'm doing a clutch soon and was considering getting these as well....
