Failed ABS Pump (320D E91) : Options?
So, just had a call back from the local dealer regarding my DTC / Steering lights on the dash.
INPA reports a 5E20 (pressure sensor) issue. Research on here suggest a maintenance kit available for the ABS pump (£140+VAT + labour) The dealer now tells me that it's not available for this version of the pump. Needless to say that I'm furious. I've sent an email to BMW UK (not holding my breath) So, I think I know what my options are, but, which is likely to be the best (Given that the clutch is on it's way out also)? 1. Get a 2nd hand pump off eBay and get a specialist fit it (it would need coding, obviously) 2. Take a deep breath and get a new one from BMW in the hope nothing else goes wrong 3. Cut my losses and trade it in against a 3 year old 318D touring (there's a couple on BMW UK at the moment) I'm sure I'm not the only one on here that's faced this issue, so any advice offered will be gratefully accepted. |

When I had my 335d and the abs pump failed I had it reconditioned by BBA Reman. Cost roughly £500 + £200 labour. Not exactly a cheap solution, but it was a fraction of the cost BMW were quoting and came with lifetime warranty for the part.
ECUtesting.com also recondition them for a lot cheaper than BBA apparently. |

ECU testing sorted mine for £250. Bba reman were a complete waste of time. Fill out the form on the ECU testing website and send the whole unit so that you don't need to concern yourself about whether the problem is the mechanical or electronic side of the unit.

Well, things are looking up. I've sourced a replacement pump (Same part num) off fleabay, found a local indie to install and bleed the brakes. I just need to get NCS running to code and we are all good. I may keep hold of the old pump and send to ECUTesting just in case. Then again, may pop on to ebay

Update: managed to get a pump off ebay for £100. Was the same part number as my existing pump.
Took it to JR Garage in Hampton Court http://www.jpgarage.co.uk/ who quoted £110 +vat to replace, bleed brakes, and code. I get a call at midday: the pump is rejecting my VIN. Anyway, they then keep the pump in place and replace just the control unit…. And all is good with the world! No lights! |

We do she'd loads of these pumps at the moment we are seeing a fair few 325/330's with this problem and at £1640ish plus the VAT plus coding BBA Reman & ECU Testing are a good alternative I've used both and they've largely been successful, the key is when the fault shows get it sorted don't allow the fault to linger to long if you do then internally it can get worse and you erode your chances of having a successful repair, currently I have 2 cats awaiting hydro units to be returned both are through warranty company's who prefer this option to supplying a new par to cost grounds, downside I'd you lose your car for a week to 10 days. There is though it's not openly shall we say advertised a repair lit now available for the six cylinder cars, but at around £890 plus the VAT it's still expensive.
Now the interesting bit? On a 320 you can get the repair kit there are 2 to 3 options but they range from around £148 to £194 plus the VAT supplied which negates the eBay option plus on the repair kit you get 2 years warranty as well fitting coding won't prove a problem supplied new(we order to chassis though the part is generic and isn't when supplied chassis sensitive as the configuration is done once fitted/bled) The 4 cylinder units then always go for the repair kit direct from BMW ( I see no need to venture on to eBay to save £50 or so compared with the security/warranty benefits the gen item offers) plus you get no issues re rejection , which is rare by the way and the six cylinder cars either take a sharp intake of breath or get it repaired or buy the expensive repair kit. |

Your chassis is 100% avaialbe with the hydro repair kit woggledog the part number is 34516797896 its £140.82 + VAT and freely available off the shelf as a repair kit

Sigh. I suspected as much. I have a case open currently with BMW regarding this (despite the fact I've had it swapped).
Just in case I'm asked, how / where did you get the part number, and how did you check that it's compatible? I really appreciate your help... |
