Turanza tires issues - right to be pissed?
So my '06 e90 had the 17" Turanza's and they have been really loud from day one and seemed to be getting worse and worse. I was waiting for the next scheduled service. Well the light for the oil change finally went on after 16K (that is another story) and I told them about the excessive tire noise, tramlining etc.
They call me back and say "Uh yeah, there is excessive wear which is causing the loud noise and related issues. We recommend that the tires be replaced and that you also have a front end alignment. Not to worry though, BMW is aware of the issue and is willing to cover 50% of the cost of replacement of the tires. So that will be ~$850 for the tires, plus $200 for the alignment so the total is just north of $1000 (plus tax I assume)". My response is "So $1100 is my portion of the cost???? You're saying that you normally charge $425 a piece for these?" OK, I had read the posts that there were some issues with these tires and that under 10K they would replace them and over 10K it would be 50% of the cost so I wasn't expecting free tires. I was willing to eat ~$500 but $1100+ to replace these crappy tires sounds really excessive. The local tire retailers have the Turanza's for ~$220. Also with the experience I've had so far I don't really want to try the Turanza's again. Would you be Just wondering if I'm off base here or if anyone else has had similar experiences? What should it cost to replace these at the dealer? I'm inclined to just take it down to the local tire shop and get a new set of non-runflats. |

I've seen other posts about this issue stating that there is a SIB on the Turanza's...

I was able to get two free sets of tires from my shop, they acknowledged the tires as defective and said they'd pursue the warranty replacement costs directly with bridgestone. First set of EL42s had 6500 when I had them replaced as defective. The replacement set went 6k miles when they got noisy and I had them replaced as defective as well. (late 2005/early 2006 date codes on the tire sets, apparently the compound problem was addressed in october 2006) The 2nd replacement set that they gave me was the continental all-seasons... wow those tires are quiet and smooth, I think they're great. IMO, no reason to ditch runflats, just ditch that model of bridgestone tire. I'd present it as "look, I knew these tires are defective, but I figured I'd save you guys some cost by driving longer on them and not being a jerk and bitching too much about every detail and wasting your time in the shop, but now I can't stand it anymore and I think I should get free tires." or something like that. See if you can get the continentals.

Oh, and of note, my dunlop snows with 7000 miles on them showed a fraction of the wear that the bridgestones did when they were cupping, and I drove those snows all the way into may when it was in the 70s.

Definitely replace with the Contintenal ProContact instead of the turanza's. Also FYI-- the Conti's are almost $100 cheaper than the Bridgestones and they are 10x better. I would pay 50% on 4 new Conti's but balk at paying for the alignment. Don't let them charge you for the mounting / balancing either.
