Question G35 Kill + Launch Question for XI

It is cold, wet and rainy right now in Toronto. I get off the highway and follow a new G35 S sedan.

We stop at a light, I pull over to the right lane. There is a merge after the light so my lane ends.

I haven't had too much time to play with my car so I viewed this as a good opportunity. The light turns green, I hear his motor gun. I "launch" the 335xi but the clutch drops and the engine bogs....but even after the botched launch, I destroyed him.

So it is always good to beat up on the Infinitis but how do you launch the 335xi??

I've tracked mine a few times at the drag strip. I had my best times launching from about 4500 RPM. Don't drop the clutch, but slip into the sweet spot (you'll find it with some practice) and floor it. Then work the clutch to hold it at 4500 revs until the speed passes that point. I never completely let off the clutch in 1st gear, but still have a little gentle pressure on it right to redline. Shift to second, and again feather the clutch briefly to about 5000 rpm, or roughly 50mph (I don't watch the speedo). Then you're right back on the clutch as you'll need to shift again by 60mph.

You drop, you bogg. Been there, tried that, it was the worst 1/4mi time I ran. Remember, a good launch is hell on your clutch, but that's why you replace them.

Cool, thanks..... Does the CDV help or hurt?

Tried that too. Spun too much on RFT's. Maybe with DR's?

It also heated the clutch too much, made subsequent shifts suck.

I still have mine installed. It means you have to shift about 6500, or you'll bump into the rev limiter. I can't explain it, just take my word - I kept mis-shifting on 1-2 at redline, but if I shift at 6500+ and go just a touch slower, no rev limiter and a smooth shift, no problems. Between my buddy and I (who works on these things), we can only think it's the CDV. Need to take it out, just haven't gotten to it.

My last two cars before my 335i were modded Evo,s. The best way to launch is a high rpm fast slip.Dont dump the clutch as it will just bog.

my friend has a g35s and those things are fast. i think a stock 335i especially a xi with a bigger powertrain loss would be very even with it, if not slower.

I think you missed the part where the OP said he bogged the launch and still destroyed the g35s.

You will probably launch slower. I don't think there is much torque left at 7000rpm plus it will be too hard core for the drivetrain.

I disagree. The 335 awd will always benefit from the tremendous torque at lower rpms. I drag raced 7 out of 9 of my AWD cars, the type of engine, quick spool up and great low end torque of the N54 makes this car a winner, the down side is its weight but still it should easily leve the G35 in the dust even if the G35 has a LSD..

you gotta be comfortable with the clutch first too do all this, but yeah 4500 to 5000 and switch you will feel that you will be able to shift gears faster when the car is inbetween 4500 and 5000 there will be less tension on the clutch... you must try this a few times to understand and get used to the feeling also you gotta be able to tell when its ready to shift.. you cant be looking at the speedometer while trying to go fast.. i doubt it works out

I might get bar-b-qued for this but I have a theory.

xi's come detuned from the factory with a bog.

I used to get a bog on my xi when I laid into it, even in DS and using a 2500 (step) brake launch. I first wrote it down as turbo lag, but at that high of a torque takeoff, the turbos should be online.

Then I put in the SSTT and buh bye bog. Then I started using 94 octane and my SSTT really came alive.

Now here's the freakay part. I took my SSTT out a few weeks ago for the winter, but I've continued with the 94. Mr. Bog hasn't returned though. Yes the car doesn't have the same punch at higher RPMs but down low and off the line, the throttle still feels as responsive as it did when it had the SSTT.

So is this a case of the benefits of higher octane or does the CPU 'adapting' to the SSTT remove some factory detuning or the bog bug?

Flame on.

The steptronic would be perfect with the XI. Power brake it with boost and then launch...
