2010 e90 Base upgrade need advice
Hi guys,
So, I had read about all the issues with the base system, and I thought I would get around it by having a professional do it for me. However, I did not get what I expected. Anyway, I'm dealing with them. Looking for advice on next steps. The problem The involved parties: 2010 E90 335i w/ Base stereo and Navigation (CIC) JL XD700/5 + JL HD-RLC (remote level control for sub) 2x Line-Out Converters JL CS112RG-W3v3 2x Hertz ET 26.5 1" tweet 2x Hertz EMV 100.5 4" mid-woof Hertz CX 300.5 crossover Not installed: Hertz EV 165L.5 (they said the stock underseat woofers were good - I assume they found them glued in and decided not to deal with it - at any rate I did not pay for it). Install config (as I understand it): HU front R/L out routed through Line-Out Converters to JL XD700/5 inputs HU rear R/L out left alone to rear deck JL XD700/5 sub > JL CS112RG + HD-RLC JL XD700/5 front R/L > ET 26.5/CX 300.5/EMV 100.5 JL XD700/5 rear R/L > Stock underseat woofers I think they said they used a HPF on the amp to manage the underseat woofers. Ok. So I have 2 main problems. 1. Gong is all the way down and way too loud. Also affects voice guidance. 2. I have the treble tone control turned down to manage the wacky stock EQ. Now - possible solutions? Ideally, I would prefer not to drop several hundreds more to fix these, but I do want to know what I can do. Here is what I am wondering: Can I recode this HU to HiFi? If I can, what would that solve 1 and/or 2? Would it require re-wiring? They talked about "tweaking" the amp settings to manage the gong. Any thoughts on whether that is going to help, or what I might look out for if it does fix the gong - other issues it could cause? After a brief conversation with the installers, a Cleansweep has already been mentioned, along with another option for double the price that they would calibrate to the car - I read that as another grand to solve what I just paid them nearly 2 to fix. However, while I know that will handle the EQ issue I am concerned it will not fix the gong. Appreciate any advice you guys have to offer. |

Not upgrading the underseats is a mistake
Not upgrading the under seats is a mistake.
A good set of under seats in the cabin will make more difference than sub's to the overall sound. I good set of under seats should be low passed. They should of done something about eq upfront these guys are not pro's or like most shops don't know how to do a BMW upfront. They just took a stab at it. If you don't want to pay for another device and want to give your amps the signals God intended then I would see if I can find somebody that can actually recode a 2010 to Hi FI . I understand it may require a Icom head working through the Most Bus. There is some thing going on that makes it harder to recode the newer head units. It shouldn't require rewiring but the crossover settings and gain on the amp will have to readjusted. That will drop the volume on your rear speakers to how much I don't know if it will be and acceptable level or not. Well you would have to remove the Locs if you recode to Hi Fi. Which shouldn't have been necessary it the JL takes High Level Inputs. Last edited by ctuna; 04-16-2014 at 11:48 AM.. |

The LOC is insufficient in the Base system you need signal frequency response correction in addition to level correction (the 700/5 may in fact be able to accept Hi Level, can't remember).
That gives you two options: 1)Recode to Hifi a) tell dealer to code "ISTA/P, conversions path, HiFi amplifier retrofit" or "ISTA/P, retrofits, ALPINE HiFI b) its possible to do it via the VO but its complicated and few have been successful. 2) signal correction a) cleansweep or similar b) processor (MS-8, Alpine H-800, Mosconi 6-8, Helix, etc) The glued in woofers CAN be fixed, you have to pry like its not your car - but I would NOT swap one 6.5 for another 6.5, you need an 8" in there. |

I definitely know that I want the underseats (and rear deck) dealt with, but at this point they've wired them into the amp channels I thought would be reserved for the back deck. I will look into an upgrade in the future for sure, and I plan to argue with them to get it wired appropriately into the crossover system up front - that was the original plan. What is the difference between 1a and b? I am not that familiar with coding; is 1b an option to have someone besides BMW do it? I would really like to recode if I can; my main concern is that I'd get stuck with another labor bill if they have to open up the HU and rewire. |
