Oil leak ?
First off, I just changed Oil, coolant flush, PS flush, changed spark plugs, and cabin filter with no hiccups in my 1 week old 90k mile 2008 335i. Thanks to the DIY's, it went pretty smooth and had no problems. Awesome
Now, to the thread topic. I noticed some serious sludge underneath. Check out these pics, where is it all coming from? (obviously its an steptronic) 20140418_080652.pdf 20140418_080655.pdf 20140418_080703.pdf 20140418_080709.pdf 20140418_080721.pdf 20140418_080725.pdf 20140418_080735.pdf 20140418_080739.pdf 20140418_080750.pdf I have a 1 month warranty from where I bought it but I think its for mechanical breakdown coverage in which all transmission related parts are covered. I do plan to take this to local BMW shop, but if they can't fix it under this warranty, I might take other actions. Last edited by mo2566; 04-27-2014 at 11:15 AM.. |

Update, I took it back to the place I bought it to take a look on Friday. They noticed a leaking o-ring on a sensor (cam, I believe they said), so they replaced it for free and cleaned up a lot of the oil. That was nice of them, but I am not sure it solved the problem as this was a lot of oil to be coming from that. I wanted to look to see If I can pinpoint a OFH leak, What's the best way to see if the OFH gasket is leaking? Pull the intake? or does more stuff have to come off? I could not tell from the top with just a flashlight since I do not know exactly what to look for yet. I also looked underneath after pulling the under tray. I see some intense buildup here:
100_0195.pdf (its underneath, close to the radiator fan) Any idea what this is? Looking from up top, the major buildup area is straight down from the engine cover here: 100_0203.pdf Could this likely indicate valve cover gasket, or is there where a OFH leak would run to? Underneath the rest wasn't too bad, I did see what looks like fresher oil along the oil pan bolts, but not sure if blow back from the front. Thanks for the input |

I took it in to the local BMW dealership and paid them for oil leak diagnosis/inspection. It is the oil filter housing with an estimate of just over a grand. They said everything else looked fine. This may sound weird, but I have never been so relieved for a $1k estimate
If I can't get the 1 month used car warranty to cover it, I'll buy $100 in parts and I'll do it myself while I check out my valves for carbon buildup thanks to the wonderful DIY's here on e90post |
