looks like their is a bold missing, you might wanna start by cleaning the oil up and replacing the bolt!

Had the same issue mine ended being the oil filter housing gasket. I replaced both and leak is gone. May sound crazy how a leak from the front of the motor ends up there. Looks to see if u have oil residue running around the cam sensors.

Hi guys,
I`m new here and this is my first post. Sorry to hijack the thread but could not find any other regarding engine leak. Just about to buy a 2008 E92 330i and spotted something under the bonnet. http://postimg.org/image/fhvykv5zd/ Car covered 47k miles. Should I worry about this? Is this an engine oil leak? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

Yep looks like it.
And actually if the car is under warranty and u see an oil leak of any type you're better off to get it checked regardless. Cuz it will only get worse and parts for this car are very expensive when you gotta pay out of pocket! |

Valve cover. Take a lighted mirror and fish it behind the valve cover near the fire wall. You may see the culprit.
N54's are notorious for 1) valve cover gasket 2) oil filter housing gasket 3) transmission linkage 4) rear main seal 4) crank case breather hose Looking at the pictures real close, if you say the oil filter housing is not leaking. Check the oil by opening opening the fill cap. If is bubbly and yellow, then the crank case valve is not functioning properly. That's a $35.00 part. You have to look at the backside of the top of the engine. So, take the cowl off. If that's not it, then look at the back side if the valve cover gasket. If no, then it's most likely your rear main seal. The Rear main seal will cost upwards of $1200.00 to replace. Unless you have a hydraulic lift, I would not try to replace it yourself. The seal itself is about $36.00 plus you now need a special seal paste, which was not part of the original install back in 07. |
