335i slow to boost..
Hi Chaps.
I have sent a log to Terry but I thought I would have a listen to the wealth of info on here while I wait for a reply. So last week on my way back through Germany, car was running awesome and pulling like Bieber in St Trinians, then all of a sudden I have 0 boost. No where in the rpm in any gear (car is throwing a 'boost under target' 'probable boost leak' code constantly). "Not to worry" I thought, probably a inlet pipe off the intercooler or something similar. Got home and had a proper good look and found nothing. So I head out again for a few pulls and it's just the same. Then miraculously as I pull off a roundabout, bam! 15psi up the ass and the car is off like a stabbed rat. Then today it's back into slug mode again, although this time I'm getting some boost, it's just taking ages to get there. (car is throwing a boost under target code constantly again) I guess something is on it's way out. Wastegate rattle has got quite a bit worse since xmas.. Could it be a sticking actuator rod? Only other mod is catless dp's. Any ideas guys n' galls?? I'm driving to London today so may not see any replies until later. Thanks in advance. WM |

Turbo actuator pressure converters maybe ruptured? It certainly sounds like some kind of boost leak.
I had similar symptoms with my 335i. See here. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=902639 |

I came across that while looking for an obvious boost leak. A very well done diy. Car is under insured warranty so if there is no easy fix it's going back to the dealer for new turbos too while they sort it, as the rattle is really starting to get on my nerves. It's just a pain as I will have to switch the DP's back. Unless anyone knows a DP friendly dealer....? WM |

Very kind of you Idan.
Could you post them to me next week so I can rule them out? I will return them to you the day I do, with full reimbursement of costs. Terry has got back in touch in super quick time. I have a simple vacuum test to do to rule out any leaks. And then it's the solenoids next on the hit list. My instinct tells me its the solonoids as it started as an intermittent fault. I think once a leak is leaking, it would carry on leaking. I guess the solonoids could fail over time (well, I assume only 1 has failed). I'm on holiday for 10 days now so it will have to wait until I get back. Drove to Gatwick from Yorkshire with no boost. Felt like my old 116i... If it's just the solonoids I will take the hit on cost as its easier than removing the dp's to put it through the warranty. Thanks again lads. WM |

Yeah no probs mate, have dug them out for you so let me know when you're ready. They were in a pile of parts so no need to rush on your side.
In case anyone is wondering, I still have my full spare engine so if you need anything let me know. I also have two turbos spare which were taken off the donor engine. |

So guys.
I did the vac test last night and everything seems to be working fine. I have spoken with Terry about the results and he thinks everything is as it should be. But there is still no boost. I am now left with the option of actuator/wastegate/turbo failiure. I have read reports of binding actuator rods causing the wastegate to stick open, as the vac can't close it. I can just reach down to the rear wastegate pivot arm and it feels mechanically stuck. After a bit of wriggling I can get it to move, then it slides freely. Unfortunately the fix for this involves removal of the dp's. So it looks like new turbos time. Can anyone confirm that the actuator rod should move freely with engine off? WM |

I went out this evening and manually moved the arm just as i started the car. Went out for a drive and I was on full boost, no problems. So I have narrowed my problem down to a sticking internal wastegate.. Time to call RB I think... WM |

Yeah I think you're on the money there.Maybe I'm wrong but I could have sworn I've seen a 335i In bits at work and it got the wastgates replaced seperately.
Ah wait, you mean the wastegate pivot bearing in the turbo itself? |

I can't tell if its the actuating rod binding on the pivot arm, the actual pivot arm bearing seizing, or the wastegate itself stuck in the turbo exhaust port. But something is stopping it. Either way, its a warranty job for new turbos. There is a temporary fix by shortening the actuating rod, but it's such a pain to get to. WM |

Also have you replaced all the vacuum lines?

Yep. Done the check and all is well. Vac lines are all fine. Been in touch with Terry and double checked, he is of the same conclusion as me. Went out last night and pulled over 15psi of boost once I had manually unstuck the wastegate.

Bugger.
Are you gonna try to get the WG's adjusted or just go straight to Mr Rob Beck? I went for new OEM turbo's instead, regretted it ever since...

I don't see the point in adjustment, just delaying the inevitable. Warranty will provide me with oem then these will be sold to help fund RB's. (Then I will cancel the warranty.) I need to go through the man maths though. As this way will incur the $600 core charge.
Such a shame noone in the uk offers a soloution as good as RB or VVT.... :-( WM |
