n54 with 53000 miles
so i am buying a 135i with 53000 miles friday, owner has all the maintenance records, all injectors and hpfp changed out last year, valve cover gasket changed last year, and oil changes done at the recommended 15000 miles. would you feel comfortable buying this to go fbo, i know i want to change the plugs and give it a walnut blast. was never modded before.
thanks |

Sounds like a good buy. One maintenance issue I would make you aware of is the water pump, when it goes out the car shuts down and will need to be towed. Just had mine replaced at 60000 miles.

im coming from a vw 2.0t that i owned since new and beat the living hell out of now with 120,000 miles. i guess im just anal about my 5000 mile oil changes, cant get bmw service intervals. would you guys change out the coils as prev maintenance or wait for them to go?
any of you guys run Total Quartz 9000 for oil? i have a good hookup and thats all my 2.0T ever saw, 20$C for 5L, couldnt pass that up. i plan to be fbo within a month, thanks |

Yeah the recommended 15k oil change is a farce it's only because BMW is paying for it at first. The real recommendation is half that, every 7.5k miles or less and or every year, whichever comes first. That's my recommendation anyway speaking of which, and as far as oil goes, I started with BMW oil, then German Castrol 0w-40 I believe which wasn't bad, and now getting ready to throw in some Amsoil 5w-40 European formula to see if it reduces my oil temps at all...my oil temps aren't high but I've heard good things about this oil and it's BMW LL-01 approved which is what you want...

Also, listen for wastegate rattle, if the car has it you might be able to get brand new free turbos under a specific warranty. What year is the car and how much you paying for it if u don't mind me asking?

Aside from all that in terms of checking it out, have a mechanic do a compression leak down to ensure the engine's health.
Surprised no one thought of this... Good luck and enjoy!!!!

You'd like to see shorter oil change intervals. Not bad. I just bought a 2007 sedan 335i with 50.4k miles for 19,500. I'm in Cleveland so I'm not sure how the market compares to wherever you are in NY. I plan on going nuts with mods. Walnut blasting will eventually happen but it's a car-by-car thing as to when you NEED it, though the concensus is to have it done ever 40-50k miles. Things go on cars, if you have some money or a daily driver/backup vehicle, then jump in!

Sounds like a great deal for the mileage and year. Also, like others have said, find out about the water pump. Mine went at 41k. Luckily I was 1/4 mile from my house.

Sounds like a car I would buy, just would narrow down the oil change intervals. Walnut blast for sure at 50k and plugs since cheap and easy. Packs not necessary unless you want to avoid possible issues as your mileage climbs. Keep an eye on the wp, if you make it to 75k - 80k I would change it then. Also start considering trans and rear diff fluid, depending on how you like to maintain your cars.

- Water pump/thermostat
- Valve cleaning/OFH gasket - Valve cover gasket (if your spark plugs are oily)/PCV - Trans/diff fluid These are all things you NEED to worry about @ ~50k miles. I'm in the process of cleaning my valves now. At 56k they are disgusting. |
