Advice for trunk SUB Setup on a budget ($500)

Hello Gentlman and Ladies,

I have a 2007 335i sedan, and I want to add a bit more bass to the system as it has none.
I did some research and JL Audio seems the way to go.

I am thinking the following should do the trick for me. I dont need a huge amount of base, but I like it to be there for just in case :-)

I did some research and the following ported box should do. Its a bit Large but not too large, I should still be able to fit a stroller in the trunk if I have too. its about 12x28 so I would lose one foot behind the seats.

HO110RG-W3v3 for the ported box, i wanted to pair it with the Jl Audio Jx500/1d Mono Subwoofer Amplifier, but I called a shop and they are recommanding the XD series, but they are a bit pricey.

What do you guys think about this set-up?
HO110RG-W3v3 for the ported box paired with the Jl Audio Jx500/1d Mono Subwoofer Amplifier

I would love to do this install my self, once I got power to the new amp, would I be able to connect the new amp to the existing speaker amp? not sure how that part is done.

What else do I need to do this install?
I did not buy anything yet so any advise it welcome.

Thank you

Corner enclosure. Look in the M3 FS section, I saw one there for $350 with a W3 sub.

It is sold. Did not show up as sold on my app, sorry. However, if you keep an eye on both FS sections, they pop up from time to time, or you could post a wanted ad.

Thank for checking for me. I do like the stealth box, however I do not mind the ported box as I am thinking I can use it in another car in the future, where as I would have to sale the custom box.

thank you

If portability is your main concern, sure, go for it. I will tell you though that our trunks are bass traps for standard enclosures. Be prepared for lots of rattles and muddy bass, and the constant reminder that the bass is behind you.

is there anything I can do to avoid that? I don't want the rattles...
I guess I could cut out an opening trough the arm rest if that is strongly suggested.

I also like your idea of an IB set up. I read many reviews and a ported sub seems to be more ideal with the w3 subs. Do you think that a ported sub might be too powerful for our cars?

I had considered the shallow sub-woofer and sealed box idea as well, however I am thinking I might not get enough bass. I was going to bolt it right against the seats in the trunk. I would think that should limit some trunk rattle. Most of these take as little as 6 inch of spaces. If you have experience with any such set ups I would like to hear about it.

thank you

You can always apply deadening mat throughout the trunk, but you increase weight as a result.

Infinite baffle is best if you're willing to cut the ski-hole. Do it, you won't regret it!

I do not mind cutting the sky whole, I just need a grid or my children wont let that sub last long...
Do you have a link that shows which sub and what amp was used? I will start to look into it, just need a bit of guidance :-)

DIY for ski-pass hole:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=779179

You can use the plastic cover behind the armrest as a grille if you cut out enough holes and you can cover it with speaker cloth.

Just search the forum for "infinite baffle" and you will find some examples of what people have done.

What kind of Amp would you recommend to use with a JBL GTI MKII 12 SUB in IB mode?

You have found a very nice sub! I would suggest to go with the 15" version though.

Regarding the amp, if it were me and I was on a budget I'd go with this:

If I wasn't on a budget:

You will also have to think about how you're going to get a signal from the OEM system. You probably have L7 in which case you should get a technic subwoofer add on harness.

Another consideration is to put an amp on the underseat woofers at the same time. They come alive with some added power and you can use the amp crossover to cut them off at the sub crossover frequency so they do not play the same frequencies as the sub. You could get another 2-channel amp to do that or get a 5-channel from the beginning.

The 10" or 12" Morel Ultimo SC, which is one of the subs that VP Electricty uses, is an excellent sub in that it will not pull the stage back. It is very transparent sounding and people will not realize you have a sub in your system. Pair it with one of the stelath enclosures from VP Electricity and you can have a nice stealth install that your kids won't wreck.

That would not fit the OP's budget. The Ultimo 10 SC is a very nice sub, but a lot of people end up replacing it because it is too "tame" and does not get loud enough. I don't believe you can accomodate the 12" version in a corner set-up, unless the enclosure is close to 1 cf.

do you think the 12" would not perform well enough? I am thinking 15 is just too big, takes too much volume and I doubt I will ever be able to use it again. I understand that there is a lot of cubic feet back there and the bigger the better. Would the 12 still hit hard?

I think I will go with the Kenwood AMP you are suggesting. I will cut out the areas behind the armrest my self, perhaps even mount the Subwoofer, but I will most likely have someone else wire the the amp. They should have everything they need to do so.

I am currently on that boat. Looking for a little more oomph than the 10SC can produce even with over 1000W being available.

The 15 won't take up much more space at all. The output capabilities of the 15 are a lot higher. Also, with IB cone area is very important. The less the cone has to move to achieve a certain volume level, the cleaner it will sound.

Don't assume that the shop will know how to wire it up correctly. There are many examples of botched installs by "professional" shops on the forum. This is not a Honda. Many people do research here first and then take the info to the shop. In the end though it is easy to do yourself if you use the Technic harness. You can do it without but you will have to splice OEM wiring and buy a GOOD line output converter (LOC). Look at Audiocontrol and David Navone.

The problem is the enclosure is too small and too shallow for a sub that will do that. If you don't/can't go IB, may I suggest another solution. Get another enclosure from WickedCAS for the driver's side. Sell the Morel and get two decent 10" subs. Make sure the enclosures have the exact same volume by adding the right amount of solid filler to the larger one. Then hook them up so each gets 500W from the amp.

E90TiAg335i used to run two corner enclosures with Soundsplinter 10s on a Zapco DC500 amp and they sounded excellent and got loud as hell on 500W total.

Haha, yes they did sound great. I've recently played around with the phase of the underseats and the sub. I found that I had the underseats out of phase. It's almost as loud now with just the one Splinter 10". Too bad it's about trashed from being slung onto but nitrous bottle a few times.

I'm in process of building a 1cf enclosure on the driver's side for a IDQ12. I hope to finish it this weekend. I was looking for a pair IDQ15s for IB but could only find a couple v1 and I want the option to rebuild them later.
OP, sorry for going off topic! I'll stop now and good luck...
