Suspected water pump failure (335i)

Hi guys and gals,

Benn running trouble free for a while now but after leaving the car at the garage to get brake pad sensors fixed the cars fan has been constantly running and like others the overheating comes after 5 mins.

There's 1 other strange thing that I have noticed all the other posts didn't mention and thats the cars hesitation to rev! It doesn't seem to want to boost low down and hardly revs but once it picks up to maybe 4k it boosts violantly and takes of like you just launched it! Then once you change gear it's back to the to the hesitatation/ flat spot.... Any one come across this or is it all related to the malfunction of the water pump?

Also any of you know where to pick up water pums at a reasonable price?

Mine started with the fan coming but no warning lights, which got me thinking straight away and I drove gingerly, within say 5/6 mikes I'd lost the throttle, could do a thing other than drive along in D at 1200 I think it was and no kore, but no still I saw no warning light, but I knew 100% what it was and a quick check I saw probably what you'll see namely 2E81 electric water pump speed deviation followed by 2E82 electric coolant pump cut off.

Sadly all too common on the 335i 330i I've heard but haven't had any 130's and 135i's and a host of X3's

Haha damn auto correct!

Well it's back at the garage now anyway and hopefully labour will be free as it wasn't doing it when I dropped it off! No one do reconditioned pumps or is it best to just buy new?

Anyone know if the bolts from the old pump can be trimmed to fit the new ****426 pump? Found a new one on eBay with no bolts but £30 cheaper?! Lol

Old bolts wouldn't fit, you can buy some new ones for £2 each from BMW direct.

Just fyi. If you buy direct from bmw you will be covered on a parts warranty which covers the part and the labour if the worst was to happen again. Im not sure where youll stand with an ebay bought pump even if it is genuine.

That would only work if fitted by BMW though would it? My closest BMW garage is a ferry ride and 2h drive so it won't be fitted by BMW I'm afraid. Joys of living at the very top

No. Iv had a chain tensioner from bmw that I fitted to a mini a had years ago. It failed a few months down the line and bmw replaced and fitted it free of charge.

So may still be worth it. They also post item to you aswell so no need for the long journey to collect it?

I had a similar issue with my previous 335. Driving fine then suddenly warning lights for overheating and complete loss of power! Frantically switched the engine off, restarted after 10mins, no warning lights. Managed to make it home with no issues then the same happened the following morning. Turned out to be the water pump.

You do get a one-year warranty on a genuine replacement, even if fitted by an independent garage. Not sure wether they'd cover labour costs, though.

I probably would have gone for a recon pump if one was available at the time - I think I paid just under £500 from BMW.

Bmw price with discount inc coolant and bolts was £405 for me. Not bad to be covered.

I thought so as they have done parts and labour for me before. Try bmw and ask for a trade discount or youll go elsewhere and inc fluid and bolts should be just over 400.

I will give them a try and post how I get on. I thought they'd only cover it if it was fitted by them but since it's not for the extra £20 it's a no brainer!
