aFe intake issue
Over the weekend, I got my car walnut blasted and decided to clean my intake filters. When the filters came off, both intake inlet piping caved in due to high heat from my engine bay. My car was probably choking all this time. Thanks to Kent for TIC, he heat gunned it back to shape, but I just wanted to bring it out there for other's who has aFe intake and might have the same issue.

I haven't cleaned my filter for last year and half. And this is my daily driver. I think when aFe designed the intake with plastic, they underestimated how hot it get's under our hood.

Add me to the list, although not nearly as bad as OP. Glad to know a heat gun can mold it back into its original shape. Until I did some searching to see if anyone else had this issue, I thought I was going to have to replace the unit.
Does posting after 3 months count as zombie revival thread?

Send a pic to aFe of your issues, I am sure the will help to replace it. If you get declined let me know and I will help going over some heads to make sure it gets resolved.
However you must be the original purchaser of the aFe product and have your receipt from whatever vendor you got it from. Itf its an eBay purchase sorry cant help ya on that one...... |

I'll check mine too, but I crank them decent enough to know they're snug. I've had mine for 3 years now. No issues at all.

I'm in on the clamps being way too tight. It basically collapsed the area. You don't need to tighten an air filters clamps very tight since there is really no way that anything will pull apart.

I'm a little bit disturbed that it was so easy to re-form with a heat gun because that means it can deform again just the same.

As everyone mentioned, the clamps were on too tight. However, I didn't torque it down hard or anything. It was just hand tight. So I think their plastic is bit fragile.
Anyways, now I just barely tightened the filters and it seems to be staying on just fine.

Wow.
I was having beers with a friend yesterday and when we left the bar I popped my hood to show him my engine. He pointed out one of my AFE filters was sitting in the heat tray....the rubber rim melted and tipped apart. It was just sitting in there disconnected. They only have 1000 miles on them. Scary. Yanked it off and back to BMS. Thinking of doing Mr. 5. Sorry to see that, OP. Scary!!! |

I just checked mine and it's fine. I only tighten the clamps 1 1/2 turns once the filters are snug.
