Weird one, eggy smell in car

Also in the engine bay. Worst when the car first starts, after that it just seems to go, a little confusing. Theres nothing dead in the engine bay or anything like that. Wamt to make sure its not some filter thats gone or whatever.

Cheers

Eggy smells have bee associated with DPF regen - how long has it been since you first noticed the smell? And is it all the time?

Could be linked to the AC. Not noticed it that long. Just sometimes does it on start up and then passes.

Anything i can do?

An eggy smell has been associated with cat failure. Never heard of dpf regen causing that smell.

Years ago when cars didnt have dpf's the eggy smell would signify your cat was on the way out.

Id put up with the smell before spending god knows what to replace the cat lol. Ill try and blast the AC for a while to see if it makes the smell pass.

I use to get this on my 325i when i hadn't been on the motorway for a while. Most of my driving is short journeys. When i'd eventually get on the motorway id get the smell for a while then it would go. Seemed like the cats were just cleaning themselves

Garage List
2011 BMW 335xi  [7.00]
well when i was younger, i had a buddy of mine throw an egg from the passenger side seat through my drivers side window....well thats what he tried to do and he hit the door sill and for months my car had a eggy smell...somewhat similar??

maybe the air from the air conditioning is dirty? I have noticed what you are talking about. Have you found the solution yet?

I'll tell u what it is as I just had this. It is a common fault for the gear box sump to get small splits and leak due to them being made from plastic. The smell is transmission fluid buring on the exhaust. It's nasty. Have a look at your gearbox and I bet you will see a small leak on the sump or wiring grommet.

It's most probably your AirCon. A build up of bacteria and mildew.

You need to purchase some form a AC cleaner which kills/remove the bacteria or get AC system regassed as most companies usually run a cleaning agent through the system at the same time.

i use to have a horrid smell in the car sometimes and when doing a normal check over i found a GB leak had to change the sump, gaskets and oil from BMW (not a cheap job) but no more smell since! never really put 1 and 1 together!

Not the mrs trying to be funny and keep trapping one in there? These are supposed to be good if its something in the car http://www.motorgeek.co.uk/cgi-bin/e...uct&db_pid=120 the mrs had a car that leaked once and sat for months not used went a little mouldy in there a proper clean removed mould but needed a ac bomb for the smell. start the car put ac on recirculation and throw it in. Windows closed obviously. Unless its dpf or something else like others have advised

Maybe worth checking your screen wash before all the expensive things, mine stunk like that when I bought the car & it had only been filled with water. I drained the bottle simply by spraying the windscreen until no more water came out then filled it up with neat screen wash solution, now just use it at 50% concentrate, had no egg smell since.

Oddly it had been fine until it went low, i replaced it with screenwash and now there is a bit of a smell when i do the wipers.

Weirdly it does it from first startup so im aprehensive about it being a gearbox issue as id have thought it would take a little heat before it produces a smell?
