For those without USB or wanting Bluetooth audio

Decided to write this incase it's of use to anyone looking for better quality phone audio or that doesn't have USB.

My phone made a really annoying static type noise when plugged in through an AUX lead, both in my 1 series and now my 3 series. After searching around I found a lead on ebay that uses the line level USB audio output of the iphone 4/4s (doesn't work with 5< unfortunately) and charges the phone at the same time. I ordered one and have been using it this week, much better quality audio and more importantly no hissing - all for £2.99!

Cable:

12v USB charger (needs to be slim one to clear arm rest when cable is in)

The second solution I tried was an A2DP bluetooth receiver. This is powered from the USB adapter and plugs into the AUX port. Sound quality isn't quite as good as using the above cable, but it's certainly not bad and worth it for the convenience of not having wires. you connect to it once like the bluetooth phone and then it connects every time you're in the car.

Yep, it has nothing to do with the Bluetooth in the car, it's just that little dongle that looks like a USB stick which receives the music signal then outputs it through the aux cable which you plug into the aux socket in the car.

I'm going to try and pull the armrest apart and hide it somewhere for a more OEM look, but I'd definitely recommend it. Coupled with a kenu airframe you've got an easily visible/controllable music solution with no wires/phone model compatibility issues...also good when passengers in the back want to play their music

Pretty much (minus the remote). I hadn't seen one like that when I was looking, but looking at the picture I doubt it would clear the armrest lid as it sticks out a long way from the 12v socket, there's not much height clearance in there
