Number plate has to go somewhere and the bumper is the only place it can go really. You could fit a small sticky type one to one side like the Evo boys do, but you risk getting pulled all the time.

Can try not having one, depending on where you live you might get away with it. - ILLEGAL
Smaller one zip tied to the lower grill so it's removable. - ILLEGAL (If you had a short reg a full size might fit) Tow eye mounted one. - Depending on what plate you fit on it, can be LEGAL Up in the windscreen. - ILLEGAL. |

If you take a completely legal plate but the registration only has a few digits, is it legal to remove the blank space on the sides?

- Character height 79mm - Character width (except the figure 1 or letter I) 50mm - Character stroke 14mm - Space between characters 11mm - Space between groups 33mm - Top, bottom and side margins (minimum) 11mm - Vertical space between groups 19mm See here for the full document with the details: https://www.gov.uk/government/upload.../dg_067666.pdf So legally from a spacing perspective, as long as it meets those it can be legal. I say can be, since there are issues like the BS number being on the plate, and the postcode of the supplier I believe. But in general, as long as it is spaced legally, you would probably stand a good chance of being OK.
