Silicone Intake Hose: Gauging Interest

UPDATE!: Recieved the hose, pictures on the 3rd page...

Today I decided to go ahead and do the charcoal filter delete for the stock airbox. While I had everything apart I started looking a little closer at the rest of the cars stock intake system. I noticed the intake hose that connects the airbox to intake manifold is made of cheap plastic with bellows and a noise muffler. I did some searching and it appears there is nothing as far as a silicone intake hose for the n52/51? I found silicone products for just about every other engine besides ours.

I have a friend that imports silicone products for Audi's and he said it would be a pretty easy part to manufacture. I'm curious if any of you would be interested if I could get a run produced? Pricing would be between $60-$70 and would be available in 4-5 weeks. Product could be ordered in Black, Red or Blue depending on demand.

Disclaimer: Obviously I am not a vendor nor am I an engineer so I cannot claim any performance gains. I would imagine that there would be an increase in airflow because of the smooth interior surface of the silicone hose as well as some added intake sound. Could be a great low cost mod for the guys wanting to keep the stock airbox.

Below are a few pictures of the stock intake hose for reference. I also included a picture of a silicone intake hose for E46 that I found online.

Let me know what you think!

And the E46 Intake Boot

I had the same idea but couldn’t find any suitable silicone hose. I would get one if it’s available.

My cheap and simple solution to the stock tube w/silencer was to use the spectre flex pipe from autozone. Worked great and never had an issue with it on the stock intake box with K&N drop in and charcoal delete. All of that with a muffler delete resulted in something like 5hp and 10tq to the wheels on Xi without a tune. I think the dyno graphs are posted in one of Axiom's threads. Might still have the sheets if anyone needs proof of this.

I would save your money for the ESS kit personally.

I would be down. I already did the custom euro box mod and am planning to do a custom version of the dinnan ram air mod so this would naturally fit right in!

Had the same thought, but couldn't find a suitable pipe. So I'd be interested.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Just picked up another stock hose to send off for production. Should have a quote in about 2 weeks with more specific pricing and time frame. I'll keep this thread updated as I get more information.

Part number on that, or a link? I googled it and got a few different products to come up.

Not sure about the 3IM. The inner diameter of the hose I am copying is 3.25" so you would have to verify the fit. The idea of replacing the stock intake hose with a silicone piece which eliminates the bellows and sound muffler will help decrease turbulence caused in the hose and allow more air into the engine faster. It's another piece to the intake puzzle for us who prefer to use the stock or euro airbox.

Not to downplay your efforts for a complete silicone replacement, but actually, there is a DIY for a silicone hose coupler/smooth elbow replacement for the OEM intake hose

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=spectre

DIY shows using a chrome elbow, personally, I didn't want chrome - painted the elbow satin black...

Would be interested, but not at the mentioned price, ~30$ would make more sense.

Thanks for the reply. I did see this DIY and after reading through the comments it sounds like the fit is not great. I am looking at producing an exact fit silicone replacement that looks good too. As mentioned earlier I am guessing at the price. I will know more in 2 weeks when I talk to the manufacturer.

Might be possible? Won't know for a couple weeks. I wanted to air on the high side just in case.
