Brake pads

Hi All,

I'm thinking I want to replace my front brake pads with a low dust version now even though the onboard electronics tells me I have another 12,000klms to go . While searching this forum, I've found people are reccommending Axxis pads which happen to be manufactured by Bendix in Australia. Bendix don't market under the Axxis name here and the only reference to a suitable pad for the E90 in their range is called General CT. Has anyone here used these pads before ?. I'm interested to hear your view on stopping power compared to origional pads. My last experiance with Bendix pads was about 8 years ago on an E36 and the performance was noticable different. Like many things, technology catches up so I'm assuming it will be a better pad. Low dust would be nice however braking efficiency and safety has to come first.

As a second option, any reccomendations on different low dust pads greatly appreciated.

P.S - I also want to ensure no squeeling

I had very good success with EBC green pads (kevlar material) on my e39 540. No dust no squeal, excellent stopping and very good life. I changed the rotors from OEM to ATE power rotors when I first put EBC pads on.
I intend to use EBC again on my e92 335 when pads are due.

BMW OEM rotors and brake pads are made by ATE. I had forgotted of EBC green pads so I will look into those.

Speak with Simon Harrex at RX Automotive up your way who should be able to point you in the right direction.

I can't imagine non dusting pads squealing, its generally something you only get on high end gear like pagid pads for track use.

ATE power rotors have groove pattern on the face. I am not sure but the rotor material may also be different. The "dust" is a combination of pad material and metal from the rotors.
German tuv standard required a high speed stop with cold rotors and to achieve this a combination of soft pad/rotor material was used. Most German cars, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, BMW produce a lot of dust.
Maybe this has changed a bit with EEC standard but in the e39 era dust was a big problem. My e92 335 does not produce as much dust as my previous e39 540 on OEM brakes, however I will be making a change when pads are due.
If you just change pads make sure you at least have the rotors machined to remove the OEM pad material that has transferred to the rotors so that the new pads can properly bed in.

I think I read the about the German TUV requirement and when you think about it, it makes sense they need very efficient brakes in Europe due to the high speeds on the Autobans etc etc. Since we in Aust can't legally do those comparative speeds then going to different spec pad should not present a big problem. I will research this further over the coming weekend.

I've given up trying to clean the brake dust on my E39. I'm using OE ATE pads still.

My search for aftermarket front brake pads has come up with nothing. Bendix don't have them for the E90 as yet nor do any of the other major players. Only option given was by Sherrin Motorsports where they would take a pattern of my existing pad and have them custom made. This was going to cost $400. I'm sure there has to be a manufacture in Europe already so I'll research that option over the next weekend.

I just swapped my pad and rotors on the front, using EBC red stuff and their dimpled/slotted rotors. Good pads and they brake well. You do get some squeel though...
