Launching this car
Am I the only one that has a hard time launching this car at the drag strip? What is the secret?!
-Traction control completely off -Transmission in M2 -Rev to 2000(ish) RPM This doesn't work for me. After 2-3 seconds, the RPM's fall and my launch is ruined. ![]() |

Mine takes off like a rocket, 2nd gear manual, I floor it and let it shift from there...

I've found 2000 rpm is too aggressive for a launch and causes spinning of the tires. Something closer to ~1400-1500 and then easing into the skinny pedal (how soon you can push full fuel will depend on your mods and tires). Some really sticky tires help a lot. My best 60' time so far was actually using the traction control to help control the torque to the ground. This was in 2nd gear. I haven't fully mastered this yet though ... there's a lot of things going on there at the launch.

Ok. That makes sense. I posted when I first got the car and everyone said to launch at 2200 RPM in M2. I believe it was on HotRod's post. My 60' times are usually from 2.0-2.3 seconds. I don't think a better 60' will get me from 13.9 to 12.9 though. Does meth make that big of a difference? |

So when analyzing data on my car I noticed it will protect itself if temps get too hot (EGT's for example can cause de-fueling... and EGT's can get really hot on a 1/4 mile run). You should really be monitoring how your car behaves under different circumstances to learn how to optimize its performance.
Also, the condition of your DPF and how long its been since its last regen can also significantly impact EGT's on the 1/4 mile pull. Another thing ... and this one is big ... watch your EGT's at full fueling vs rpm vs hp. The hp curve is pretty flat for a lot of rpm range. Even though you can make nearly the same hp at ~4400 rpms ... the EGT penalty is much higher up there than at the same hp level at ~4000 rpms. You likely won't see this on a quick dyno pull, but on a long 1/4 mile run the impact is big. Monitor what your car does if the EGT's get too high... Data, data, data...

So does the water component. The water can really help control your EGT's.

Was that pre or post turbo EGT's? I see it happening much lower than that on my car. But the EGT information is coming from the post turbo probes.

I believe it was pre turbo, I had a PC3 gauge and If I remember right on the TDI, it was a pre turbo sensor...Ill check, Im always interested in EGT temps...

In a recent autocross I toyed with a couple methods for launching. I got 13 runs that day on the course. On two runs I disabled traction control fully, M2, revved to 2k power braking. On both runs they were slower than my other runs. Sure it may look impressive with engine revs and wheel spin, but the lack of traction seems to kill the times.
My best lap times were traction control disabled, DS, then promptly ease into the throttle so as to minimize wheel spin until you have it floor and traction hooked up. |
