not much choice for me....although i do pretend sometimes to be downshifting using the paddles and trying to convince myself...I AM CHANGING GEARS!...

D for the commute, but i find myself upshifting on the paddles quite alot as i feel it holds the revs to much, whilst also trying to improve my MPG.

I am yet to really use D/S mode and will give this a go to see if i see any improvements in both drive and mpg.

It will trust me drive for a good few miles in DS you'll pick up on the fact that the throttle feels more alive, though you'll also notice the shifts for a time will feel more abrupt jerky etc. In time with you using DS things will get a bit smoother, try afterwards to take control yourself and manually run the gears up and down by pushing/pulling the lever(or if you have them flicking the paddles) then you'll see how different things feel.

Put the gear lever back in D and you'll also notice that it'll feel more urgent too after your little play, really does make a difference.

What is the science behind that? Does it adapt to your behaviour in the software or is it all psychosomatic? One week in to owning my first ever auto im still finding my throttle inputs are taking some getting used to particualry in regular vanilla D mode.

I do enjoy switching to full manual but still feel its quite intrusive, as sometimes on a slow motorway run in traffic when i would preferably keep it in 6th and just on 1k revs it will knock it down to 5 and you suddenly find yourself very close to the car in front without really relising it. A full override would be good, but obviously without a manual clutch it aint gonna let you do that. Can you adjust the downshift minimum rpm on the software when coding?

The car will shift to whatever IT thinks is the correct rpm/speed! ....That's for all all of you that "think" that you are in control and the AUTO provides the same level of control over a real manual. You can play with your paddles all day to fool yourself.

wasn't having a go directly at you mate.

a thread about auto v/s manual came up a few months/ years ago, and some people on here though that they were seriously "in control" of the gears.

I've now taken to manual in mine. I like being in control of when to change up, as for changing down the car does it for for me as I slow down which I like. But if I want a shunt up the road, foot to the floor, several gears dropped and we are away with the car changing up by itself when it hits the red line.

Also, driving nicely, I think driving it like you have a clutch and taking your foot off the accelerator when changing up must help mpg over time . My last tank got me 40mpg up from 37 on the same journey, just drove differently.
